Remember high school? The countless cliques of math nerds, quarterbacks, gap guys and goths? Every person seemed to have their own stereotype. Every person that is, except for that one kid who no one seemed to notice. And because we never took the time to speak to that kid, we undoubtedly also overlooked his brilliance. Sure, he spent the majority of his days hidden in the back of the classroom, almost too shy to make a sound. But every once in while, without reason the most breathtaking answers would escape his lips, leaving us the dunce.
Kevin Devine is that kid. The music industry is his high school. Put Your Ghost To Rest is him speaking up.
So with every awkward attempt to break the silence, Devine says a mouthful. His top heavy topic lines range from suicide (You’ll Only End Up Joining Them) to self-loathing (Just stay) substance abuse (Me & My Friends) to the post 9-11 American dream (The Burning City Smoke). His heavy hitting lyrics seem to contradict the calming nature of his melodies in an almost indescribably ironic manner. They leave you almost struggling with the decision of which is more heartfelt; his honesty or his harmony.
