The Dirtbombs, TV On The Radio @ the Electric Factory, Philadelphia

Openers were already mid-set by the time I arrived at the on Friday due to parking issues and there is no tiptoeing around around the fact that I found the five piece completely lackluster. Unable to get into the photo pit at this time, I sat on the bleachers with a friend. Some of the beats were catchy, thanks in part to two drum sets, but I just was not able to get into their tunes. We flipped through my friend’s The New Yorker awaiting ‘s set.

The fellas kicked off their set with the title track from 2003′s Young Liars EP and from the very first note, Nigerian-born front man exploded with energy jumping around the stage. Much of the fantastic set, of course, included tracks off recent release Dear Science, which has already broken the top five on Billboard‘s Top Rock Albums list and hit number 12 on the Billboard 200.

As uninspired as I found the opening act, watching TV On The Radio rage on stage was an utter delight.

”I found the five piece completely lackluster”

    Care to explain why?

I’ve seen over 100 bands live in the past two years and they were definitly in the top 3. Infact I’d go so far as to say they were the best. I’m just curious as to how you came to that conclusion?

It’s a bit weird that you even bothered to review them if you arrived late…

  • Teddy

Wow! You read the “New Yorker!” That’s so impressive. I hope one day, I can arrive late to shows I am reviewing just to call a band lackluster, namedrop a magazine, and then write like a schoolgirl gushing about her first crush for the rest of the review.

and by the way, the Dirtbombs are not lackluster. They are, however, different than TV on the Radio.

The Dirtbombs’ people never confirmed that I set through them. TV on the Radio’s did.
I found it lackluster. There wasn’t much else to be said.
I see so many bands live that it’s starting to jade my concert going experience and I was not impressed by the Dirtbombs. I have nothing against them as people, I’m sure they’re awesome, but I didn’t enjoy their set.
That’s all I have to say on the matter, please feel free to continue to trash me.

It seems more like lazy journalism. As I asked before, What exactly did you find lackluster about them?

Here’s a beginner’s guide list of things you could use as examples-
Stage Presence, Crowd interaction, Set Length, Not liking the Genre, Member’s attitude etc etc

You dont really say why you didnt like them and that’s kinda what’s bugging me.

Plus didn’t you get in on the Dirtbombs guestlist?

For starters, The Dirtbombs people never confirmed with us that we would be covering them. Therefore, Jessica was unaware that she needed to be paying attention, or even attend their full set. This “Lazy Journalism” is a result of a “Lazy Management Company” not doing their job. Communication is important when covering a band. The words, “You are in fact, covering this band” tend to come into play.

The photo pass in question was confirmed and handed to her by TV on the Radio, the only band she assumed she was covering. This is why all the photos are of them.

As for why she didn’t like them, I can’t really say. But, I assume from their albums, it would be because their sound is pretty much the same guitar riff in every fucking song, with deep, punkish lyrics over it. Punk all blends together and when you’ve covered 150 shows in a year, becomes easy to ignore. This could be the case.

here’s proof of confirmation, let the comment run you cowards and how DARE you try to put the blame upon ANYONE but yourselves for this situation:

    Hey Kasey,

Would it be possible to switch the show from Philly coverage on 10/10 to NYC coverage for October 14th? Mona Shiekh is available and more than happy to cover the band at the Masonic Temple.

    Thanks!
    Jessica

    Hey Jessica,

The list for that show is already full at this point but I’ll let you know if anything changes. I’ll still keep you down for the Electric Factory show if that’s ok? Sorry about that!

Well, then I spoke out of turn and I stand corrected. I was unaware and simply going on what I had been told. For that, I apologize for unintentionally bullshitting you.

However, are you actually going to tell me that you would rather see a review in which a journalist belittles a band, than skipping the coverage at all? I’m rather confused by this. I get the whole bad press is still press theory, but I don’t know if I buy into it. Personally, I have no opinion either way about this band, as I wasn’t there, but when I cover a show, I would rather keep my mouth shut when a band has a bad show. However, you guys seem very passionately that they ARE wonderful. I’ve never seen them. So rather than rip Jessica apart, I would rather hear what you personally enjoy about them.

So you tell me what she missed. Was anyone AT the show?

Hell, I know that when they’re here, in Kansas City on Halloween, I’m going to sell out the cash to see what the fuss is about. What should I look for?

    Dear Ben,
Posting personal emails, not to mention name calling, is petty.
Posting them to suit your needs is even worse. That correspondence was almost two weeks before the show — I sent another email on October 10th to confirm that, yes, I was in fact set for the show, but it went unanswered.
I’d been in talks with TVOTR’s contact since mid-August regarding the show and when I asked for confirmation the day of the concert, I was answered with a yes, I was set with a ticket and photo pass.
Upon getting to the venue, I had one ticket and one photo pass under TVOTR and not the Dirtbombs. The fact that I found the latter unenjoyable had absolutely nothing to do with that.
I did arrive to the venue late. Unprofessional, perhaps, but there were extenuating circumstances and this is not my profession. I’ve never been anything but honest in my posts on this site and I honestly found the Dirtbombs set lackluster. The friend in attendance with me did as well. If I’d been allowed into the photo pit at the point, it would’ve been my pleasure to shoot, but it didn’t work out.
How dare YOU stir up trouble in the comments rather that facing this situation professionally and contacting me directly — you clearly have my email address. Speaking of “cowards,” how about posting your own personal email address next time around. I didn’t let that run the first go ’round because, the way I see it, it’s more embarrassing for you to have it up here.
I’m not going to apologize for finding the set lackluster, but if and when you pass through Philadelphia again, I’d like to buy you, even the whole band, a drink. I have no doubt that we’d probably get along great. Really.

Teddy, honey, my friend had a ‘New Yorker’ in her bag. I wasn’t saying it to be cool or pretentious, it was the truth. We read the cartoons. I had ‘Madame Bovary’ in my bag, and that’s not really something you can leaf through with a friend, na mean?

If you’ve really nothing better to do, please continue to drive up my hits and look at my pretty TVOTR shots. This is a week and a half out, I’m finished with it. Thank you all for contributing.

    jessica,
as i see it, your guest list spot was confirmed in the emails i posted above. what confuses me is why you’d be asking BOTH bands for guest list spots?

also, as the one who physically wrote your name +1 with photo pass under “THE DIRTBOMBS” i can also tell you that if you were already on TVOTR’s list, there would be no reason for the person running the box office to check our list as well.

this is all petty, i know. but what seems cowardly is that after a spate of comments on here about your write up, YOU WENT AND CHANGED YOUR REVIEW! YOU PROVED THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE! AT LEAST ACKNOWLEDGE THAT TO WHOEVER’S READING HERE.

i don’t care that you found the set lackluster. there’s no accounting for personal taste. what i took offense at was the fact that you called us lackluster without any explanation. i come from a traditional journalistic training and was always taught to have facts to back up your story. you simply lacked the facts.

anyone who knows my name and knows how to use google can send me an email within thirty seconds. i am not embarassed by ANYTHING.

all that being said, i commend you for doing SOMETHING. more people writing about good music makes things better for everyone. i too think we would get along great if we just got to meet face-to-face. there’s no hard feelings here and i think we’re pretty close to understanding each other.
