Portland electronica trio Starfucker got off to a late start at Philadelphia’s M Room, but a dynamic set with loads of energy more than made up for the audience patiently waiting for the set to get underway. The trio’s electronic sound was riddled with samples and repetitive piano chords, and every song had an airy feel to it. The instrumentals were fantastic, a necessity since the vocals were mostly drowned out by the loud instruments.
Much of the set had a space-like atmosphere as Starfucker took the sizable audience at the M Room to a dreamlike state with ambient tunes before surprising the crowd with scratching and beat boxing. Bleeps and boops punctuated nearly every song while the occasional somber piano melody mixed up the bubblegum synth pop emanating from the stage.
The eclectic nature of the guys’ influences lends itself nicely to their catalog and kept the stage show interesting by infusing different elements such as doo wop riffs and Caribbean percussion to the wildly upbeat dance jams. What Starfucker lacked in tightness, they made up for in versatility and smoothness. Definitely an act to catch.
West coasters can see Starfucker as they hit a smattering of West Coast dates.
