Late last month, Old City’s Tin Angel found itself in the midst of a Swedish invasion: Theresa Andersson, Tobias Fröberg and Ane Brun took over the evening and brought the audience beautiful and unique sets. The night kicked off with Andersson, who now resides stateside in New Orleans. It was my first time seeing the songstress and there are just no words for how impressed I was with her one woman show.
Andersson started by plucking out a funky bass line on her violin before launching into a looping fest that could only be rivaled by the likes of PopWreckoning favorite David Ford. From the moment Andersson began looping, I instantly though of Ford and imagined how amazing a bill with the two of them would be (someone make that happen, thanks).
It took no more than 3 seconds into her second song, “Na Na Na” off her newest release Hummingbird Go!, to completely win me over. Andersson’s vocals are strong and lovely and her talent at each of the instruments she works into her loops is just unreal. At certain points throughout the set, it seemed as if Andersson was stepping on pedals and pushing buttons simply to see what would happen, but all the sounds came together calculated beautifully and perfectly.
Aside from her obvious musical talents, Andersson has one of those infectious personalities that instantly brightens the moods of everyone within sight. Her love for life was plainly seen on her face as she bounced around the stage playing with all the pedals for looping — she took ballet lessons in preparation! — in one of, if not the, most dynamic sets I’ve seen all year. If Theresa Andersson is within a day’s drive, I highly recommend making it to see her perform.
