As the government watches your every move and fear any challenge to their power; you jump across rooftops doing clandestine operations, every step a struggle to stay alive in hopes of a better future. This is the plot to a new video game called The Mirror’s Edge whose theme song by Swedish artist Lisa Miskovsky is fittingly titled “Still Alive”. To coincide with the game’s release, a remix album of the theme was also made.
First is Miskovsky’s original version filled with soaring vocals and Coldplay-esque piano lines. The lyrics could easily be for anything: a radio-friendly pop love song or a video game theme. While nice, its generic nature makes the remixes all the more worthwhile.
On the Benny Benassi mix, the “I’m Still Alive” chorus is distorted and layered kind of like the way Imogen Heap does vocals. A building synth line accompanies. The driving beat cuts out for the more ethereal vocal sections giving this remix the feel of being a collision between Frou Frou and The Faint. The Junkie XL mix expands even more on the ethereal sounds and replaces the usually harsh electronic sounds with an effect that sounds like glass harp and xylophone. The original piano from Miskovsky is more apparent in this remix, too.
The Paul Van Dyk mix clocks in at a lengthy 9 minutes and 35 seconds, but this is the mix you would put on at the club. The vocals don’t even enter until nearly 3 minutes in, with the first half being based around the piano theme that really makes Miskovsky’s song. The tapering off at the end seems to be a little excessive, but other than that, the length of this track is worth it.
The other included mixes are by Teddybears and Armand Van Helden. Being a fan, I really expected the Teddybears remix to blow me away, and while it’s good, it’s not their best work. I did like how more so than any of the artists they focused on the piano theme and even have this cool section where they play around with the octave and timbre of that theme.  Helden’s mix takes looping to a new extreme. I had to actually double check that their wasn’t a problem with the song that made it keep skipping. While I’m fascinated by looping effects and the pitch distortion that Helden does, the thickness in which he piles on the effects to this song are a bit much for me, making this remix the most difficult for my listening.
The game, The Mirror’s Edge, and the Remixes are available now.

It’s a pretty good song. Curious to hear the remixes.
My fave tracks from the EP is Theme from the Mirror and the remix of Still Alive by Junkie XL……… It’s cool how the lyrics of the Still Alive theme song fits into the game’s story.
Curious remix
Amazing
I just love Lisa Miskocsky
I’m still weirded out about how Portal and this game had same song titles, since both were praised for their originality and whathaveyou XD
