Realistically, I could fill an Olympic sized swimming pool with adverbs to describe Limbeck. They have side splitting wit. They have endless talent surpassed only by their modesty. But, above all, the Limbeck boys are genuinely just nice kids looking for a good time.
Stopping in at the Jackpot Saloon on their way to Ohio to pick up gear, Lawrence was blessed with a sort of B-side acoustic show in order to help Robb MacLean and Patrick Carrie pay for their gas. Cleaning the clutter away from their usually driving alternative country sound were the clarity of Robb’s vocals and their ability to blend with Patrick’s. The shrills and whines of their guitars seemed to independently stand out, separate from the poppy drum riffs and petal driven hooks. With each epic rock show guitar solo shifted to singer-songwriter mode, the band’s lyrical content seemed shifted to the forefront.
Regardless, the crowd offering up drinks to show their approval, were not disappointed. Fan favorites “Honk & Wave”, “Julia”, and “Big Drag” took on a whole new life, following a far less collected course. They seemed to represent more of the versions you might have experienced has you caught Limbeck writing them in their living room. Yet, as a whole the show itself remained effective and fun. “It cost seven dollars to get in here tonight,” mentioned Robb towards the end of the evening, “we don’t want to give you a six dollar show.”
But truth be told, in the nine times I’ve seen Limbeck, I’ve never gotten a six dollar show. Tonight, was no different.
