Girl Talk came to Columbus, January 17th & 18th for a two-night party. Is “party” the right word? More like… two-night “all-out dance riot.” Read on for second-hand experience.
Grand Buffet (right) was the opening act. (Well… the only one worth mentioning. Hearts of Darknesses – with the exception of their drummer – were terrible, and the first act didn’t even warrant me making a note of their name.) This hip-hop duo from Pittsburgh warmed up the crowd with their satire-heavy lyrics and their entertaining banter between songs – with rants on everything from politics to birth control to Red Delicious apples. A smart choice for the thousands of fans waiting eagerly to see Gregg Gillis (below).

As I was shooting photos from the balcony during the Girl Talk set, a middle-aged woman approached me and began to marvel at the intensity of the show. She was there with her two step-daughters, and was completely in awe – to be honest, so was I.
“I can’t get over how much energy’s in this place,” she said. “You would never be able to get a club to look like this in Columbus – no matter how much they promoted it. And then they bring this guy in, to the Newport, of all places, and look what he does to it! This is unbelievable.”
Unbelievable doesn’t even come close to describing this show, and I don’t think I can manage to put it into adequate words, so I’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves.
