Philadelphia’s Hoots & Hellmouth will celebrate the release of their forthcoming record, The Holy Open Secret, at hometown Johnny Brenda’s both tomorrow, May 28th and Friday, May 29th. The Holy Open Secret is due out June 2nd on MAD Dragon Records.
Their shows are like traveling tent revivals; their audiences are like congregations. Editrix Jessica and staff photog Dese’Rae Stage witnessed this at last year’s Popped! Philadelphia Music Festival, in which the fellas played and later graciously sat down to chat with Jessica. While the emphasis has always been on the live experience, H&H’s eponymous debut studio album is shaping up to be one hell of an adventure.
The band has concocted a musical blend of roots/revival sensibility with a healthy dose of rock n’ roll energy that is all their own, starting with the core instrumentation of two guitars (Sean Hoots and Hellmouth), mandolin (Rob Berliner), upright bass (Tim Celfo), three-part harmony vocals and foot stomps. If their CD release party is half as much fun as fellow locals Sisters3, you’re in for a good f*cking time, Philadelphia. Catch a sneak peek of the fun times ahead by listening to “Known for Possession”.
