In 2001, The Dandy Warhols made the album The Dandy Warhols Are Sound. While the Warhols’ loved the album, their label at the time, Capitol, did not. Capitol decided to remix the album and made Welcome To The Monkey House.
Well, the Warhols finally released Sound on their own label.
I must confess that I love Monkey House as is. I’ve always enjoyed its deep bass and use of synths. However, during some of Monkey House’s songs, I got bored and annoyed at its electronic flourishes. Sound includes all the great songs on Monkey House, but tones them down. Sound is airy and free flowing, while Monkey House is structured and full-bodied.
Sound sounds more like the Warhols – it’s full of scratchy jam outs.
For example, “We Used To Be Friends”, is less produced, “Burned” has a stronger build and “I Am Over It” is more akin to an abstract psychedelic melody (you definitely get a contact high).
Sound’s tracks are in a different order than on Monkey House, too. The longer, space-ier songs are at the beginning and end of the album. Also, one song has been renamed – “Pete International Airport” is now “Pete Int’l Spaceport” – totally out there, but I dig it, man.
Sound is a good album, but takes some getting used to if you’re a fan of Monkey House. Give it time; it’ll grow on you.
The Dandy Warhols Are Sound is available now.
