“The Mouse” ruled Kansas City again. Everyone standing inside the sold out Crossroads on Tuesday night knew it; the people joining on the surrounding balconies knew it and “The Mouse” (as one under-the-influence man repeatedly referred to Seattle indie- rock outfit Modest Mouse as) knew it. But no matter how much Modest Mouse did rule, this was no ordinary show. Not from where I was standing anyway. “Why?” you ask. Well, take into consideration these ten random notes about the show and then ask yourself that same question.
1. The opening band (Avi Buffalo) barely looked old enough to drive, let alone be touring with one of the decade’s most recognized bands. But, despite how young they may have looked, they were easily some of the most talented musicians I’ve ever seen.
2. I was bumped from behind as a young woman passed out in between bands. Behold, victim #1. (I’m sure it was just the heat getting to her.)
3. The down time in between bands seemed ridiculously long. However, they did manage to tune Modest Mouse front man Isaac Brock’s guitar a handful of times. I remember thinking to myself, “That damn guitar better stay in tune.”
4. Despite the stagehands’ countless efforts, Isaac Brock’s guitar still managed to be out of tune. No worries though, Brock played it off as if the rest of the band was playing in the wrong key. They stopped the song, Brock demonstrated the correct way to play the song, and they confidently restarted the song like nothing ever happened. This is “The Mouse” we’re talking about here.
5. Halfway through Modest Mouse’s set, “the heat” claimed another body. Behold, victim #2.
6. “Trailer Trash” was requested for the seventeenth time by a kind, loud-mouthed fellow standing a few feet behind me.
7. Brock kindly, and abruptly, wished the audience a good night as the band exited the stage.
8. As the crowd grew increasingly anxious for a Modest Mouse encore, repeated attempts of claps and chants proved to be nothing more than a failure. Do those ever work?
9. As the band made their way back onto the stage for the encore, “Trailer Trash” was requested for a twentieth time by that same kind, loud-mouthed young man standing behind me.
10. Isaac Brock bantered with the audience during the encore. This wasn’t the first time during the show either. Weird.
Alright so maybe this wasn’t such an odd show for Modest Mouse. In fact, the only thing from this list that may be weird is Brock being so chatty with the audience. Other than that, “The Mouse” is still “The Mouse.” For years now they have never managed to disappoint me and they definitely didn’t start on Tuesday night. I don’t think they disappointed any one in attendance Tuesday night, aside from the “Trailer Trash” man. They never did play that for him.
If you haven’t heard the new Brandon Flowers single, “Crossfire,” it still very much so has a the Killers sound to it. With the talk of God and the slowed down tempo, it’s a lot closer to the Sam’s Town era for the band, just with tamer drums.
Flowers just released the music video for “Crossfire” and much like the title, he’s caught in the crossfire of all sorts of deadly situations: ninjas, torture situations, bombs. Eeks. Thank heavens Charlize Theron is there to save him. No wonder he repeats “lay your body down” over and over once he’s rescued. That’s Charlize Theron! We’d do her.
Oh, and Brandon Flowers is currently doing a promotion to reveal Flamingo‘s album art. Go to Facebook and click “Like” to help reveal it here.

Fly away and escape reality for a moment with the catchy dance tune “Pigeons” by Brooklyn duo The Hundred in the Hands. The dance pop song is already perfect for clubs, but remix gurus Foalswent ahead and added their own spin.
Check out the original version here and then listen to the Foals’ take here. We’ve had both on repeat, but we really love the extension that Foals gives it with its trumpeting music interlude about two minutes in. The descending bass line also gives the song a darker edge than the bubbly original. Adding to the darkness, is the way Foals’ latches on to the lyric, “Fly away,” and uses that to help fade out their six minute take on the song just as they led into it.
“Pigeons” will be on the The Hundred in the Hands’ debut self-titled album due out September 21.
Pre-order the album here.
The video is directed by Kevin Custer, who has been working with the band for a seven-part “Making of American Slang” series. In this video for the title track, Custer casts the band in black and white, with tight shots on their faces and eyes as they watch the people going about their day to day activities in New York. It’s a beautiful video and almost like watching a documentary within itself.
The album is due out August 24 on Saddle Creek Records. The debut album from the band was highly praised for its frontwoman’s – Lizzie Powell‘s - powerful Stevie Nicks-like vocals and lush guitar riffs. This sophomore album promises to be just as brilliant as the first.
Cloak and Cipher features a slew of Canadian guests including Jeremy Gara of Arcade Fire, Patrick Watson, Stars and fall tourmates, Besnard Lakes. Tickets for the tour are available in an album pre-order bundle here.

It’s no secret that Of Montreal loves Janelle Monáe. Anyone who caught the band at Lollapalooza or other random shows the past two years can attest to that. The band frequently invited the songstress to join them on stage for guest vocals. And with her spunky personality mixed with her classic croon, she’s the perfect compliment to the funky indie rockers.
Of Montreal is officially taking Janelle out on a fall tour with them as they promote their newest release False Priest. The tour kicks off in Washington, D.C. with a two night stand at the 9:30 Club September 13 and 14.
False Priest is the 10th studio album from Of Montreal. It will be released in conjunction with the start of the tour: September 13 in the UK/Europe and September 14 in North America. The Adult Swim series included tracks from artists such as LCD Soundsystem and you can download and check all 8 singles out for free here.
The band also released a video for the song directed by Daniel Garcia. They brought in balloon artist Jason Hackenwerth to deck Madeline out in a feathery pattern, but we’re a bit torn if this makes her look cool or like a giant vagina. Watch and decide for yourself:
