Nate Young (Anberlin), Tim McTague (Underoath) and Reed Murray (Marksmen) have started a new side-project called Carrollhood.
According to the trio’s blog: “Carrollhood is a project between 3 friends, Tim McTague, Nathan Young and Reed Murray. It’s about sharing music in hopes to inspire art as much as we can. Tampa is a small city with a lot to give. We thought it time to start making that potential come to reality. This is the main page where you will be able to keep up with what we have going on. Thanks for poking around.”
The band’s first song, ‘Remission’, can be downloaded for free here.

Rock and roll outfit Quietdrive of Minneapolis, MN, have taken to Kickstarter to fund their next album, which will be comprised of fan-picked cover songs. In 2006 Quietdrive released their debut record, When All That’s Left Is You on Epic records. Since then they’ve released 3 records, Deliverance, Close Your Eyes, and the 2011 self-titled record, Quietdrive. Releasing the last 3 records on their own label, Quietdrive has followed their own DIY ethics to continue the success of creating music for the last 8 years.
The band writes on their Kickstarter page: “For as long as Quietdrive has been a band, we’ve wanted those who love and support us to know our appreciation. Without your support, none of what we’ve been able to do would be possible. As a gift and a thank you, we would like to give you a record all your own. These songs will be for you and chosen by you. This truly is Your Record, and its simple to make it yours: donate 1 dollar and receive 1 vote toward any song of your choice. The more you donate–the more votes you will receive. Also, check out the exclusive packages that you can receive below–like posters, a documentary, shout out videos, and even an in-studio visit.”
Seattle indie-rock bandFences and Louisville, KY rocker Mansions will release a 7-inch split EP on Tuesday, July 26. Fences/Mansions – which boasts one new track from each artist – was recorded in April 2011 at Avast Studios in Seattle, WA – where both artists now live. Fences’ “Marketplace” and Mansions’ “On My Way” were recorded over the course of two days by Fences’ guitarist Jonny Warman and showcases a new song and some of the best aspects of each band.
The limited-edition 7″ will be available for purchase at select retail shops in Seattle, San Francisco, LA, Chicago and Louisville, as well on the bands’ websites and digitally through iTunes. Also in July, the bands are embarking on a 10-day tour in support of the disc, which will also be for sale at each tour stop. The trek will kick off on July 22nd at Seattle’s Capitol Hill Block Party and land in Chicago on August 7 at Chicago’s famed Lollapalooza.
“The first time I met Fences, it was clear that we needed to work together,” says Mansions’ Christopher Browder. “We both write bummer songs, and the bummed need to stick together. But the thing I love is that we both approach that type of music from a slightly different angle, which was even more clear in the studio together. While ‘Marketplace’ is a beautiful sigh of a song, my ‘On My Way’ is more like a bottle thrown on the floor in disgust. Our methods and sounds might be different, but it’s just two sides of the same coin. We’re both sad and pissed off, and that is worth celebrating.”

The KickDrums are comprised of producer/singer/songwriter Alex Fitts, and DJ/producer Matt Penttila. After meeting while working in Cleveland, the two noted their mutual interests and reputations as skilled producers. They united, and soon began to produce records for an impressive list of artists that include 50 Cent, John Legend, and Kanye West. In 2007 they shifted to working on their own songs. Fitts began to focus on his alt-rock roots and songwriting. Penttila focused on his love of electronic music, began to break down records, and flip obscure samples. The eventual result was Meet Your Ghost, their second album, and the first since signing with Last Gang Entertainment.
The album was preceded by a mixtape, The Ghost. That tape might lead the listener to thinking the album would be closer to pure hip hop, which isn’t the case. It’s mostly alternative rock, full of catchy hooks. Included on that tape was a fantastic Scarface track, a relatively faithful cover of Nirvana’s “Love Buzz,” and a cameo from The Rza on the song “Perfect World.” More on that last song in a moment.
But the hits come quick here on Meet Your Ghost. Track two, “Trouble Coming Everyday” is packed with handclaps, fuzzy guitars, and an insanely catchy chorus. It’s a pop song, and a great one at that.
The album as a whole is full of fantastic pop songs, including the aforementioned “Perfect World.” It’s closer to alt-rock than hip-hop, and the RZA verse is missed, but the song is still fantastic. It’s a love song, full of blaring guitars, over a kicking drum beat. It wouldn’t be surprising if the song is all over radio this summer.
The drums are ubiquitous on this album. Even on a ballad like “Travel Should Take You Places,” it’s impossible not to be drawn in by them. The song has a classical feel that’s compelling. The KickDrums is a group that has perfected the art of crafting an instrumental.
Meet Your Ghost has some great stuff. The songs feel a little monotonous after a few listens, but the huge pop sounds are irresistible. Some of the production sounds a bit like a modern version of Phil Spector’s famous Wall of Sound. The songs are stacked, full of interesting little noises, and compelling chord progressions. There is a lot to take in on this album, it’s more than enough to keep a listener coming back for more.
Tracklisting:
1. Meet Your Ghost
2. Trouble Coming Everyday
3. Colors
4. Perfect World
5. Counting On You
6. Naked
7. Had Too Much To Dream Last Night (Feat The Kid Daytona)
8. Love Can Drive Your Mind Wild
9. Travel Should Take You Places
