Blitzen Trapper – American Goldwing

Blitzen Trapper – American Goldwing

, with three previous Sub-Pop albums under their belt, have produced quite the wide array of sounds. 2007′s Wild Mountain Nation sounds as if it was thrown together with reckless abandon, a giant mish-mash of sounds and passions. There were indie-rock melodies and folky boot-stomping tunes with a healthy dose of country twang. 2008′s Furr leaned more to the pop-rock side of the spectrum with Americana intertwined through and through. And next was Destroyer of the Void which took on a new sound altogether with prog-rock guitar sounds and a mellower tone. So who could really predict what would be next? At first listen, is a nice homage to Furr with influences of traditional Southern rock. It’s blatantly alternative-country and maybe a little bit indie. If anything, it showcases the band’s versatility to record whatever they want and turn it into an album. And it sounds great.

There’s a flurry of noise from multiple different instruments throughout the entire album – heavy bass, buzzing and sliding guitars, banjos, harmonicas, pianos… you name it, there’s probably an appearance. The album is lively and an entertaining and engaging album from start to finish. Noodling guitars and the southern drawl of lyrics keeps it light-hearted and energetic.  It’s rare to find a songwriter who can take such a large swath of influences and put them together, and it’s exciting when they sound so great together.

“Fletcher” is an ambling blend of backwoods country with its drunken escapade lyrics grounded by Earley’s sweet, Southern Comfort delivery and the guitar sounds by . Marquis is a great asset to the group,  generating edge and bite in contrast with Earley’s gentleness and flowing songwriting. “Street Fighting Sun” is his best of the album, a showcase  guitar power that growls and shrieks and provides great depth to the song. The chemistry of these two musicians creates a unique sound that paves most of “American Goldwing’s” middle ground, creating an easygoing sound stylistically country but instrumentally classic rock. “My Home Town” and “Girl In A Coat” are a welcome breather from the upbeat frenzy of the rest of the album, with acoustic-y guitars, banjos, and the occasional piano. Things pick right back up though and the self-titled track aptly mirrors the overall feel of the album.

With loads of praise from and Spin Magazine, Blitzen Trapper are destined for great things in the world of indie, alt-country tunes and American Goldwing is a solid addition to their catalog of tunes.

American Goldwing is a freewheeling collection that balances the roughness of rock ‘n’ roll with fateful heartfelt loss. “It’s me trying to evoke a true American nostalgia” explains lead singer and songwriter .

American Goldwing is “us letting our loves and early influences hang out for all to see. We entered into the sounds we grew up with – the hard guitar rock and country picking of our younger years mixed with glimmers of our usual space-aging technology and pawn shop Casios. Heavy guitar riffs and blasting drum fills live side-by-side with plucking banjos, wailing harmonicas and muddy slide guitars. The earthiness of these songs will make you want to get loaded and get in a fight, or find a girl and fall in love forever, simultaneously.”

Capitol Hill Block Party Day 2: featuring Cold Lake, Avi Buffalo, Blitzen Trapper, Black Breath, and !!!

Capitol Hill Block Party Day 2: featuring Cold Lake, Avi Buffalo, Blitzen Trapper, Black Breath, and !!!

IMG_5235 dawned early for the Emerald City, sunny and with a hint of heat in the air. I arrived a little late due to traffic and the insane amount of tourists that crammed the streets on one of the prettiest days we will have all year, guaranteed – and the perfect day for CHBP to keep kicking some serious indie butt. I arrived to find out that Blonde Redhead had cancelled for the evening, so the main stage schedule was skewed for the rest of the day, throwing a wrench in my plans- I had already missed the and was more than a tad disappointed.

Even though I was late, I headed straight to the Vera stage to get set up and ready for . I had heard about them in passing and never had a chance to see them live. Needless to say, I was superbly stoked. Turns out, I wouldn’t be disappointed either. Frontman Cory Brewer came out and screeched breathtakingly into the mic to match the sharp, stinging guitar riffs. It’s almost hard to believe that that screaming actually makes it way out of the mouth of said singer, due to his rather small stature and the glasses that sit atop his nose. Even with that small distraction, it was great to see them actually rock the crowd for the first time all weekend on one of the all ages stages. It’s always a good thing to see a crowd full of younger teens rockin’ out to some seriously epic punk rock.IMG_5255

After this, I grabbed a cup of coffee and relaxed a bit, wandering around for the first time that afternoon to see if anything was going on. At one point, fellow local rocktographer Alex Crick snagged me and drug me to the Cafe Vita/KEXP Bean Room, a room full of bags of Cafe Vita coffee beans and the home of local indie station KEXP for the weekend for their live coverage of CHBP. !!! (pronounced chk chk chk) was just setting up and the energy was almost palpable in the room. Despite the mixed smells of dust, sweat, and warm roasted coffee beans, the place was absolutely packed. Soon !!! was done warming up, the KEXP dj announced them, and the best act of CHBP 2010 started playing.

In the small intimate venue that is the Bean Room, you can see some of the best acts playing for a crowd of less than 200 people- something that rarely happens. With !!!, the experience was almost religious. Their newest change in lineup, singer Shannon Funchess, came out to sing along with Nic Offer, banging a tambourine whilst spitting out some of the best singing in town. On the other hand, Offer danced around, interacting with the crowd famously: dancing with them, grinding on them, climbing on the bags of bean strewn around, and seriously had some fun with the small show. Backed by a great saxophone, some seriously low drum and bass, and some sick synth, the band throws out a truely dance-funk sound with a touch of dub thrown in. By far the best show of the festival, and one of the best I have ever seen EVER, I was IMG_5503hooked. Their show at the Main Stage that night was now a must see. After some seriously awesome tunage, I headed back to the Main Stage a little more excited for the night to come.

Avi Buffalo was up next at the Main Stage. The recent acquisition means that they are now being held to an almost impossible standard. That aside, the youngsters are doing pretty darn well for themselves, playing their own indie rock sound, complete with a bit of twang. Sounding mildly unfinished, they hold a ton of potential, something I am sure saw in them. Even though they are incredibly cool now, I am stoked to see what they come up with for the next few years. See them now while they are still green and wet behind the ears before they start selling out stadium shows. I was ready for a change of pace and was thinking metal.

Metal and I have a long, convoluted history. I was raised on metal gods, old 80’s hair bands, and newer, more technically complex metal. I love it all. When I head that was playing CHBP, I was a little skeptical of their appearance at a mostly indie fest. Good god, was I glad I was wrong. Coming out and playing one of the best metal performances I have seen, the show was pure metal awesomeness. The roar of the singer, the chugging guitar riffs, ground-trembling bass, and their incredibly decIMG_5677ent drummer means this quartet definitely have a place amongst our local hardcore scene- and I think they just found a new place in my heart. I stayed for awhile until I had to bail to go figure out the main stage schedule.

Next up was , a band that I was expecting to be a little too country for my tastes. I was pleasantly surprised with their lovely and mellow sound, and as the Stranger suggested beforehand, they did remind me quite a bit of the Eagles- but I have to admit that they do put their own little twist on the general sound. To top it off, their melodic and complex lyrics were a great breather for many from the general mainstage feel.IMG_6132

Once again, !!! turned the masses into one giant dance party. Nic once again hopped off the stage and mingled with the crowd along the barrier, the band danced their butts off, and frankly, I think everyone involved had a good time. You can tell that he was the kid that was made fun of in high school for his dancing, but up on stage, it is totally awesome. He worked the photographers wonderfully, including counting down in my face, giving me a chance to grab a few special shots. Shannon was dancing with her tambourine and the rest of the band was having a blast as well. Almost as good as the show in the Bean Room, but on a much larger scale. I walked my way down the Pike Street corridor to the sound of them laying down some seriously amazing beats. I danced my way down the street, past a band of naked cyclists (regulars to the Seattle area for events), past a group of people playing some seriously sick double dutch, and made my way home to grab some sleep and head back for a seriously busy day on Sunday.

Blitzen Trapper @ the Record Bar, Kansas City MO

Blitzen Trapper @ the Record Bar, Kansas City MO

I love Conor Oberst, but when he ventured into experimental folk rock with The Mystic Valley Band, I kind of feel like that project just fell flat…vocally and as a whole. It was boring and kind of turned me off to the genre. Fortunately, the refreshingly talented Blitzen Trapper has reminded me not to give up on it entirely.

The sextet is living proof that folk and country has pitches and lead singer doesn’t overly rely on slides to hit them. Then, the rest of the band spoils the listener by complimenting his vocals with rich harmonies.

The band sold out ’s the . The crowd was a diverse mix of indie kids in fitted button ups waving their iPhones around to catch a quick pic of the band and a concert crowd I don’t usually see – you know – the type of crowd with big belt buckles. Heck, there were even a few punk kids there that really surprised me. But that’s what’s so great about , they are able to appeal to so many.

As the band plucked and strummed through their guitar heavy tunes enriched with piano, the audience responded with foot stomping, hoots and hollering. It took me back to college when a group of us ventured out to my friends barn and played feel good acoustic tunes until the wee hours of the morning. This was intimate and it felt like we were a family at this show.

When it came time for the encore, Earley reappeared with guitar and banjo to play a slower tune to cool off the crowd. Then the rest of the band reappeared and it was back to that big rock sound that made people clap and holler. “Round and round,” they sang a capella and I could have let that go on all night. Unfortunately the venue had to close by one, so despite the applause and cheers for another encore, the show really ended. But judging by the set list, I say we got well more than our ticket’s worth.

Set List (as printed, some of the order/encore might be off):

Bonnaroo Recap: Day 1, Thursday

Bonnaroo Recap: Day 1, Thursday

Some like to look at Bonnaroo Thursday as a practice day: a day to prepare for enduring the next three days of by “easing” into it with a light day of . I, however, would argue that is not a “light, ease into it” day, but the most challenging day of all. I would agree, though, that if you can handle , you can handle any day at . is a test of patience. Any seasoned Bonnaroo veteran can tell you that you can easily spend most of not at the festival, but stuck in your car for countless hours just waiting to get checked in to the campground or will call.

The PopWreck team had a slight Nashville detour for sushi and a glimpse of the CMAs, which were also this weekend, so by the time we arrived in Tennessee, the car line just to enter the city of was already outlandish. We then had to spend more time waiting for our credentials before embarking on an even larger journey to find our campsite, which managed to confuse several volunteers. Then another delay came with the time it took to set up the tent before we lost daylight. Suffice it to say, we missed a few Thursday bands that we would have liked to have seen, but those are the breaks and almost everyone at Bonnaroo has to deal with them.

For Thursday, only half of the stages were in use and while there were plenty of good bands spread across various stages, as far as this indie hipster is concerned, the only stage to be at Thursday was “That Tent.” The evening line up at That Tent consisted of , , and . So like I said, this was the place to be Thursday and the tent was packed all night.

My compatriot, Josh, did venture off to explore other bands. He went to Manchester Orchestra at The Other Tent. Here the alt rockers payed a high energy cover and a new song as well as their radio hits such as “I’ve Got Friends” and “Shake It Out.” He also swung by the wild dance party that was Miike Snow at This Tent. Snow went late, which made Josh miss as planned. Then, Josh caught the many indie rockers in Blitzen Trapper before grabbing a few laughs with Margaret Cho at the Comedy Tent. As a special treat, The RaconteursBrendan Benson performed with her.

Meanwhile, That Tent, where I was, had a constant showcase of a great indie bands. I began with CA’s Local Natives, who played most of their tunes off Gorilla Manor and a Talking Heads cover. The Fleet Fox-esque band took me by surprise. I guess I just assumed that like the Fleet Foxes, they’d be bearded and flannel-wearing gents. But the harmonious group was a bunch of young hipsters. From listening to the record, I knew to expect the great harmonies, but it was only by seeing them live that I realized how skilled the percussive heavy act really was as members, as members switched up guitars with mandolins and extra drums as well as moving around who had lead vocals. Truly fantastic.

Local Natives by Joshua Hammond

After Local Natives was the chillwave act Neon Indian. I caught Neon Indian in Denver over a year ago and I can’t get over how much they’ve progressed. The group jumped up and down while playing multiple synths. The audience couldn’t help, but dance. The band got a little scandalous during “Deadbeat Summer” when a group of of topless girls loosely covered in paint and feathers like, well, Indians, came out on stage and danced. The set was over all too quickly and sensing that, the band reappeared and played one more: a brand new song.

Next up was Australia’s The Temper Trap. I guess the third times the charm since I’ve been trying to see these guys on multiple occasions and something has always come up i.e. tornado watches. Lame. Not lame? The band’s performance. I was surprised by their jam band tendencies, but l also loved that they had them. During one great jam break, singer Dougy poured water on an extra tom drum and as he banged on the drum, water sprayed up all over the stage. Of course, the falsetto-rich “Sweet Disposition” really got the crowd moving with an extended guitar riff intro.

The Temper Trap by Joshua Hammond

But the band of the day was The xx. In an almost holy manor, the three touring members of the xx appeared dressed in black on the dimly lit stage. They surrounded turntables set up with big banners of white xs and began their set. They played most of their set and a cover. At first I thought female singer/guitarist Romy Madley Croft, was the member to watch, but I think I was getting drawn into tricks of the spotlight. Sure she has some of the better vocal parts, but it is her fellow singer and bassist, Oliver Sim, that was the real skill behind this band. Regardless, the chemistry of the back and forth vocals and answering dings of the drum machine make this a haunting band to watch. Throw in a starry backdrop and you have the perfect way to end the evening.

The XX by Joshua Hammond

Well, at least the perfect way to end an evening at That Tent. Bonnaroo Thursday has a a tradition, as St. Louis legend Beatle Bob pointed out, and that is to end the music portion with an act on the smaller Troo Music Lounge stage that features rising acts. Joshua James had the honor this evening and his American rock resonated through Centeroo as campers made their way back to their tents. Amped and ready for another day.

More photos and more recaps to come…
