Cortez! Cortez! is an indie band out of Philadelphia that is composed of trio Barney McKenna, Nick Bockrath and James Sauppe. This is a raw band that has not even been out for a year. And this band is just neat! They released their first collection of songs 8 for Infinity this past year.
Cortez! Cortez! is a new age indie-grove-rock-dance style of music that has a way of captivating anyone with in a 50 ft radius of wherever they are being played. That’s right, anyone that can hear their music breaks out into dance. IT’S CRAZY! And it’s because they are that good.
“Highways” is a techno-disco song that portrays that power that they have in their music that makes people start to break out into dance. I’ve found “Paper Train” to be heavily inspired by the Christmas song “Little Drummer Boy”. However, I much prefer this song over “Little Drummer Boy”, and I am sure that you will agree with me.
For those who are planning a party and are looking for music to play and entertain, or for those who are looking for a crazy cool dance concert, check out Cortez! Cortez!. They will make you groove your socks off. JUMP ON IT!

So who doesn’t love the weekend and free music? We dig both and want to share the love. PopWreckoning is proud to present another installment of ‘Free Music Friday’ —
Francophonic pop outfit Nous Non Plus (English: “us no more”) are set to release their sophomore album Menagerie on February 3, 2009 via Aeronaut Records. As a bit of a teaser, below we’ve got a cover of Unicorns’ “Tuff Ghost” as performed by the New Yorkers en français, bien sur.
NNP’s eponymous first album, which BUST magazine said “overflows with confident savoir-faire,” shot to the top 10 of the CMJ charts. Songs from the album have been featured on “Gossip Girl” and in European mobile phone commercials. With their latest release, Nous Non Plus builds on their 60′s French pop influences to explore a new sonic landscape–mixing Moog synthesizers with string sections, horns with distorted guitars.
In continued support of July’s Miami Ice, Icy Demons are hitting the road in support of Yeasayer and Of Montreal this fall.
Icy Demons features Chris Powell aka Pow Pow (Man Man, Need New Body) on drums, Griffin Rodriguez aka Blue Hawaii (Need New Body, Bablicon) on bass and vocals, Jeff Parker (Tortoise) on guitar, Josh Abrams (Prefuse 73, Sam Prekop) on upright bass, esteemed Chicago improvisor Tomeka Reid on cello and Russell Higbee (Man Man) on guitar.
Check out title track “Miami Ice” and if you dig it, you can stream the entire album, compliment of Obey Your Brain. Just beware of a seizure inducing background.
Apache Beat‘s new single “Tropic” was originally released as a very limited run vinyl, but it’s been re-recorded with Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Afrika Bambaataa) and is now available on iTunes along with B-side “Blood Thrills.” Summer Lovers Unlimited will release another single late this year and Apache Beat’s full length in March 2009.
Frontwoman Ilirjana’s spellbinding voice and the bands extended melodies and adventurous rhythms promise that the full length will be one of the most captivating debuts in 2009. Have a listen as to what we can expect in ’09.
After writing two hundred songs one summer, Barney McKenna walked outside and collapsed in the sun. He woke up to find his cohorts chanting “cortez! cortez!!” and ready to play the songs in any fashion, speed, or language. Really.
Made of sounds that are everything unclassifiable, this Philly band’s music will put a spell on you and have your unconscious signing distorted melodies every day. And if you really have to put words on the it, try “indie-rock-psychedelic-electronic-dance music.” Fun!
