Jukebox the Ghost, the trio behind the catchy, though slightly crazy, “Schizophrenia” is offering fans two unique opportunities.
The first opportunity is the launch of ‘the College Application.’ College students or people living in college towns can head to jukeboxtheghost.com to enter their name, email and school to try and get Jukebox the Ghost to pay their campus a visit on a spring tour.
Signing up also brings fans opportunity number two: a free download of the bands Covers + B-Sides. These future cover renditions ranging from Ace of Base to New Order. There’s also the original track “Ghosts” featuring the amazing singer Jenny Owen Youngs (who has her own pretty impressive cover of “Hot in Herre“).
If you’re not in college, you can still get the download. Just pick a school – perhaps your alma mater or favorite sports team.
And if this is your first introduction to Jukebox the Ghost, be sure to check out their fun, pop album Everything Under the Sun.
Chicago’s MoneyPenny has launched a new website and in celebration, the electro duo is giving away “Cool & the Gang” for free. Just head to Lovemoneypenny.com to check out the latest news and new features and, of course, download the song.
Music lovers that traveled to Chicago for this year’s Lollapalooza, you might have caught MoneyPenny’s singer, Jess, performing with DJ duo Team Bayside High. Or perhaps you’ve heard their song “Say No” on MTV’s the “City.” For Chicago residents, you might have partied with the girls at their monthly SPANDEXXX performances at Beauty Bar. For those who haven’t had the chance to experience MoneyPenny live, just know that everything these girls touch is a fun, good time, so get ready for their soon to be released debut EP.
Those in Kansas might have spent the last few months mourning the loss of the Wakarusa music festival. Now the only fest that this area of the country could claim is the mohawked, beer belly-filled Rockfest. But not anymore! There’s a new fest in town and in this blog’s opinion, it is pretty kick ass.
Scion Garage Fest will showcase local and national acts Saturday October 2 in downtown Lawrence, KS. An RSVP by August 30 gets fans in to the fest for free.
It’s set up like a mini-SXSW. You get to pick and choose what bars/venues you go into, but you need to plan accordingly for age restrictions (Jackpot is 18+) and capacity. The shows start at 4 p.m. and run until 12:30 a.m.
Some of the acts of note include The Oblivians, The Raveonettes, The Ponys, Best Coast, Thee Oh Sees, Times New Viking and Rooftop Vigilantes.
Sure, they’re some other hipsterfest going on at Starlight (*cough* Vampire Weekend *cough*), but this is FREE!!!! Make sure you RSVP here by August 30 so that it stays FREE! This is something you won’t want to miss.

Good things come to those who wait. So for those who have been waiting the very long, seven-year wait for a new release from Manhattan, Kansas’ Ultimate Fakebook, expect very good things. Heck, even if you’ve never heard of the band before this post, you can expect very good things.
After a seven-year hiatus, the power pop group is issuing a new full-length, Daydream Radio Is Smiling Static. The album is a collection of lost recordings from 2000-2003: 16 originals and a Guided By Voices cover. You can stream it in its entirety below or at ufbrocks.com. Then, if you like what you hear (which we’re betting you will), you can download the album for free just by exchanging your email address for the album.
“Half of these songs were written and recorded to be a follow up to Laughing Week and the
other half were written after 2003’s Open Up and Say Awesome, which was our last album
as a band,” says vocalist Bill McShane of Daydream Radio. “This is 100% a gift to our fans, and we hope that we can gain some new fans as well. Sometimes it just takes awhile for the stars to align.”
July also commemorates the 10th anniversary of the band’s This Will Be Laughing Week, a record that gained the outfit some mainstream success with its Sony/Epic Records release thanks to its catchy hooks, which helped earn the band a loyal fan base.
VV Brown can do anything. The talented singer and fashion icon has ventured into yet another art: comics.
VV recently created a City of Abacus, a comic book, with David Allian and illustrator Emma Price. It is a tale of conquest, love and mental freedom. PopWreckoning has a copy of the amazing first issue that we’re giving away for free. Did we mentioned it’s signed?
To win, simply comment and tell us your favorite project of VV Brown and why? We’ll pick a winner from the responses on Friday, July 2, at 12 pm CDT. Sorry folks, you must be a resident of the U.S. to win.
Be sure to check out VV Brown on her site and on iTunes and visit thecityofabacus.com to learn more about the comic book.
