Interview With: Nate Novarro and Alex Suarez of Cobra Starship

Interview With: Nate Novarro and Alex Suarez of Cobra Starship

If you thought I was done posting interviews from the Bonner Springs, Kan, Warped on July 2, then you thought wrong. Here is yet another that I did with some of the members of : bassist and drummer . Due to time constraints and the decision to avoid having a paper, rock scissors challenge to the rights to the interview, I opted to conduct a joint interview with of so some of his questions are included.

Bethany, PopWreckoning: Can I get you guys to state your name for the record and the instrument you play in the band?
Alex Suarez, Cobra Starship: I’m Alex Suarez. I play bass guitar.
Nate Novarro, Cobra Starship: I’m Nate Novarro. I play drums.
PW: You guys recently released “Guilty Pleasure” in Spanish. Are there any plans to do any more songs in Spanish or is that kind of a one time thing?

[youtube=http://youtube.com/watch?v=X8QN0fxeUJg]

AS: We’re just playing it by ear. I wish I could say that in Spanish. We’re not sure. We’re just going to play it by ear.
(In Spanish it would be “Lo estamos jugando por el oído,” I believe.)
Andy Powell, ProDJPublishing: How long did it take you guys to record that and actually pick it up in Spanish?
NN: Well, Gabe [Saporta] is fluent in Spanish, so he translated the song and he went and recorded it. We had the music already done.
AP: Is that how you guys usually write? Lyrics first then music?
AS: The song was basically written already, so we went in the studio and the guy that mixed our record just added the Spanish vocals over the same music that’s already on the CD.
PW: Are you guys working on any new songs right now?
NN: Always, always. We’re always working on new songs.
PW: Any new styles we can expect to hear from you?
NN: We’re trying to kick up the electronic notch a little bit, you know? We play a few songs live that way like “Kiss My Sass” and “Scandalous.” All keyboards, all the time and the added drums. We’re trying to make some more songs like that. Kind of test the waters that way a little bit.
PW: Does every one contribute to the writing process?
AS: Yeah.
AP: Who do you guys listen to? Who were your inspirations?
AS: Growing up? Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, 311, I don’t know. . Yeah. A lot of hair metal. I was born in ’81 and my brothers were older and they kind of turned me on to a lot of hair metal stuff like that. Then I kind of got into the punk and the goth.
PW: You are one of the few bands that has a female in the group. What have you done to help her survive ?
AS: We beat her up every day.
NN: We’re verbally abusive. Yeah, anything. Shit on her pillow. Anything.
AS: No, we understand. She’s tough as nails, too. So, she can beat us up, too.
PW: So, it’s the other way around?
NN: Yeah, she kicks our ass on the .
AP: How did you guys come together?
AS: Well, Gabe had the song “.” He wrote a record and had his friends on the record. He met me through the first song demo. Then he met Nate.
NN: Yeah, he met me and he had like a four song demo at first. It wasn’t even “Snakes on a Plane.” He showed them to me because I knew Gabe from like three to four years prior and then he was like, “I need a drummer.” And I was like, “Word. I’m in.” And that was my story.

AS: Ryland [Blackinton] and I, he met us through the drummer in , his previous band, because I lived right upstairs from that kid who was the drummer. He was like, “Yo, my friend’s starting a side project from our band. He’s looking for some guys so if you guys want to do that with that’d be sweet.”
NN: We met Victoria [Asher] through MySpace.
AS: Yeah, Gabe was searching because we lost our previous keyboard player and whatever, things went the way they did.
NN: You [and Victoria] were already friends, right?
AS: Yeah, a friend of friends. Yeah, I was acquainted with Victoria already and Gabe was on her MySpace and was like, “Keyboard player. Brooklyn. Female.” You know? And this MySpace picture is up and I’m like, “Holy shit. I know that girl!”
He’s like, “No way!” So, we called her up and sure enough and here she is now.
PW: Are there any new bands or friends that you’ve made on Warped Tour that you would recommend to check out?
NN: Every Time I Die. I love those guys. They’re awesome. They’re the sweetest dudes to hang with. We’ve kind of been brought up with a lot of bands: , we already knew. I just met the dude from the other night and he was pretty cool. A very nice guy.
AS: It’s like a huge hangout. A huge summer camp thing.
AP: Give me a day in the Warped Tour.
AS: A day in the Warped Tour: you wake up, maybe get some coffee, brush your teeth. There’s enough time to pull yourself together and look for the closest port-a-potty or bathroom and well, that’s actually crucial. Yeah, that is crucial.
First thing in the morning. Early. You do that maybe and have a little something to eat. Find out what time you play. Some days we play at 11:20. Today we play at 5:50. Then I find out what bands I want to go see.
NN: Yeah, you look at the schedule and you see who is playing when and you’re like cool.
AS: I have press at 1, a signing at 3, we play at 5.
NN: You kind of set your day up by looking at the schedule in the morning. Cool, I can squeeze these guys in on the way from press and to catering. I can catch these guys on the way from catering back to the bus.
AS: Halo.
NN: Yeah, I can play Halo with these guys and system link our buses together.
PW: Is that really what you guys do?
CS: Yeah, for sure.
PW: First Halo or?
NN: Three, but we play all of them. We don’t have all of them on tour. We actually love one the best.
AP: Which do you guys prefer: Facebook or MySpace?
AS: I just got a MySpace.
NN: Ugh, I just couldn’t handle MySpace anymore.
AS: It’s overwhelming with fake people that find me on MySpace and I’m like I’m done. I don’t want to deal with it on another site. It’s a lot of work.
AP: What’s on your iPod?
AS: Tons. We got a lot of hip hop, classical, early rock, lot of sixties rock, pop rock, metal.
NN: Actually, when I got my iPod, I went to my dad’s computer and I was like give me everything.
PW: Tell us the most embarrassing thing on your iPod.
NN: Kenny Chesney.
PW: Do you listen to it?
NN: No, never. But it’s there. If I ever want to make a joke, I’ll play it.
AS: I want to say my own would be Britney Spears‘ “Toxic,” but I just think that song is awesome. It is one of those most perfectly produced songs in history and that will last like 15 years.
NN: Maybe there will be a metal version.
AS: We should do it karaoke and record it.
NN: I think I actually have the acoustic version of that.
AS: Oh really? I should get that from you.
AP: Best place to play and if you say Kansas, I’ll know you’re lying.
PW: Psht, I don’t know. Lawrence has Pita Pit. (I happen to know from a previous Cobra Starship show in Lawrence that Nate Novarro has a soft spot for Pita Pit).
NN: (Eyes wide) Pita Pit! I love Pita Pit. Lawrence does have Pita Pit. Lawrence is sweet.
I like playing my hometown of Atlanta.
AS: I’ve noticed that our shows in Long Island and New Jersey are usually just the most insane shows. Like we did an in-store one time in New Jersey and the venue could only hold 300 people. Over a thousand kids showed up. It was amazing.
NN: Their shows are usually the craziest shows.
AS: Yeah, the crowd’s awesome, the shows are great.
AP: That’s all I have.
PW: Thank you, guys.

Warped Tour Rundown – Kansas City (Part Three)

Warped Tour Rundown – Kansas City (Part Three)

Here is the third installment of the Rundown. Enjoy.

5:45 P.M. to 6:15 P.M. – Hurley.com Stage

Katy

I would be lying if I didn’t confess that I became relatively nervous while making my way to the Hurley.com stage for Katy Perry’s premiere Kansas City performance. PopWreckoning had worked with her several times (Review, Interview) in the past without fail, but following a fairly awful performance on Last Call with Carson Daily , I was somewhat unsure of exactly what type of a show I would be in for. It could honestly swing either way. She could turn out to be an amazingly talented woman with the ability to command a stage and capture the love and attention of the crowd, much like ’s . However, she could also turn out to be a talentless figure head with a pretty face standing in front of a group of world class musicians with the likes of Avril Lavigne. Either way, finding out the answer to these questions seemed like kind of a big deal.

The truth is Katy Perry did not let me down. While she remained a little pitchy and yelled instead of singing more often than she needed to, Katy’s set was pretty damn good. Her stage actions are fairly amusing and her songs are really entertaining. The presence of personality that she brings to the stage is completely responsible for her new found fame. She interacted with the crowd as well as anyone I had seen that day. Bottom line is, Katy Perry won me over. She is the real deal and worth your time.

Grade: B+

5:50 – 6:20 – Highway One Stage

Rumor is that Cobra Starship is kind of a big deal. Everyone I met at Warped had their name on the tip of their tongue, which says something about the group considering the hype from the movie has long died down.

Instrumentally, the group has a tight set. For being known for providing the song to such a cheesy movie, they surprisingly have really interesting instrumentals, partly thanks to the addition of a keytar player. However, instruments may not be enough to win over the entire audience because you either love or hate lead singer ’s cocky antics, which range from dancing around the stage to brushing his own shoulder off.

The jury is still out on this group. Those of us here at PopWreckoning can’t decide if we want to give this group two fangs up or down.

Grade: B

6:50 to 7:20 – Highway One Stage

PopWreckoning reviewed Say Anything when they passed through Kansas City two weeks prior to Warped, but was left desiring a little more energy and enthusiasm from the group. After getting a second chance to see them, I feel the early assessment was pretty accurate.

Their songs are well-known and loved in Kansas City because of the heavy radio play they get here, but the group’s singer , seems to have lost his enthusiasm for their songs. It is a shame that the quirky lyrics weren’t enough to save this group from delivering a boring set. Although it was fun to see Say Anything joined by all their “friends” like Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta on “Belt.”

Grade: B

7:20 to Apocalypse – Route 66 Stage

Gym Class Heroes, much like their previously reviewed labelmates ,  have greatly improved over the years and they delivered one of the most impressive sets of the day, until it was sadly cut far too short by the apocalyptic thunderstorm that broke out during the Gym Class Heroes’ tour of the Papercut Chronicles.

Actually, the band could have sounded like shit and they still would have been entertaining. is one of the most entertaining frontmen in the industry with his great crowd interaction and wild facial expressions. Fortunately, the group sounded great, so it was a pleasing experience for both the eyes and ears.

Cute Is What We Aim For – Rotation

Cute Is What We Aim For – Rotation

is a band originating out of Buffalo, New York and formed by and in 2005. Joined by bassist and drummer the group was soon signed to the record label . The band made most of their fame from online magazines, including a major feature on absolutepunk.net which ended in quite a bit of controversy since the website’s founder was then seen openly belittling the band on the website’s message boards.

The band seems to have a good following of drama (as well as a very good sized fan base, of course). Their first record was criticized for their use of auto-tune, which producer and Hacikyan admitted to using. Rumors of plagiarism flew around, but all of those were denied. More drama sprouted durning the time where Cimato had left the band for the first time to be replaced by (previously of ), major tension was seen between the lead singer and the bassist and there are more than enough rumors still going around about the exact reason as to why Marin let the band.

Despite all of the band changes and line ups they’ve had over the years, Hacikyan says they’ve now finally become really content with a line up and that they’re thankful to have made it through everything they have drama-wise as a band. The current line up includes original members Hacikyan, Czum and Falcone. The band is completed now by bassist .

I was a little worried about Rotation because there was so much hype from Shaant about it being so much more ‘grown-up’ than The Same Old Blood Rush… I won’t lie; I was a little afraid it might have been another Pretty. Odd incident where it was a little too forced and came out not so great on most of the tracks. But apparently Cute actually knows how to write grown-up lyrics without throwing away who your band was and trying to needlessly reinvent yourself.

It certainly isn’t the same whiney teenager lyrics, as promised, though if you liked their first CD, you’ll most likely still like this one. They knew how to be different enough to grow, but the same enough to keep your attention. Over all the CD was very well done, the lyrics are just as catchy and so are the beats. The wait and hype for this CD was definitely worth it if you ask me and I recommend picking it up if you’re into their sort of music.

The Cab – Whisper War

The Cab – Whisper War

The Cab - Whisper War is another band on the / record label straight out of Las Vegas, Nevada. Don’t confuse them with labelmates Panic at the Disco though. They find themselves on the opposite end of the spectrum from their showy counterparts.

The Cab was originally started by singer Alex DeLeon and bass player Cash Colligan. Later additions would include Alex Johnson on the drums and Alex Marshall on the piano and guitar, occasionally. Ian Crawford replaced Paul Garcia as guitarist shortly after the band was signed to Decaydance in May of 2007 as the bands members were graduating from high school. Talk about an amazing graduation present right?

The Cab has gotten a lot of attention rather quickly: they were #75 on Blender‘s “Top 100 Hot Report” in September 2007, and that was 8 months before they’d even released a record! They also landed themselves a stage space on South By Southwest 2008 and The Really Really Ridiculously Good Looking , along side Metro Station, We The Kings, and , which helped greatly to gather them up a good sized following before the late April 2008 release of their first record Whisper War.

Whisper War debuted at #108 the first week of sales but landed itself the #1 Top Heatseeker position by Billboard, just another accomplishment already under their belt when most of the band members haven’t been out of high school for but barely a year.

It took me a few days to really get into listening to their CD, I won’t lie about that, but I haven’t stopped listening to it since the first listen and I even went so far as to acquire myself their EP and The Cab’s demos. They’ve got the catchiness that you put side by side when you hear someone talk about anyone associated with Fueled By Ramen, but in my opinion they’ve got a little extra spark, almost if you wanted to add a piano to Paramore back during their first album. Decaydance, aside from Panic at the Disco’s new disc, is definitely not disappointing with this year’s releases.

I definitely would recommend buying this CD, and if you can find the EP and their demos, I honestly suggest getting those as well.
