Bonnaroo Recap: Day 3, Saturday

For those sitting at home, wondering how Bonnaroo kids survive on practically no sleep for the entirety of the fest, the answer is simple: it’s too hot to sleep. Though most had been up until 4 a.m. Friday night with LCD Soundsystem, the humidity made it hard to sleep past 7 a.m. Which kind of sucked because there wasn’t too much going on at until the early afternoon. And it especially sucked because the day was only going to get hotter.

The high temps didn’t damper the spirits of Pennsylvania’s Langhorne Slim. is like a non-pop version of Jason Mraz, which I would argue, is the better version. Langhorne’s music was laid back folk rock. Even the surprise appearance of a little kid dancing around the stage didn’t disrupt their good-mood. In fact, it improved it. Langhorne incorporated the kid into the act, dancing with him, lowering a mic to his height and even giving him a high five. Adorable.

Next, it was time for perhaps one of the biggest buzz acts of the fest: Conan O’Brien. Conan’s band performed an introductory jam that had them all out playing their saxophones and trumpets out in the audience, and giving high fives in between notes. The band returned to their spots and a video appeared projecting Conan: bearded and in a fat suit. He looked like Santa’s cousin. The video followed Conan around looking miserable and being depressed: he was eating junk, ignoring his daughter, etc. But then he gets a call: “Want to do a tour? Are you in shape?” Within moments, the beard was trimmed and the fat suit dropped. Then Conan himself appeared in the flesh. The jokes were a mix of being kicked off TV quips and jokes about Bonnaroo…and of course, some that combined both:

“In six months, I’ve gone from hosting the Tonight Show to performing at a refuge camp.”

The set was also highlighted by the appearance of , , a Triumph the Insult Dog video message, and of course, the infamous Walker Texas Ranger clips. Although, the Walker clips did inspire the audience to chant “aids, aids, aids,” which might not be the most appropriate thing ever. Other cute moments included when Conan took the time to take a picture with a fan in the front row.

This being a music festival, there were also plenty of musical aspects, too. Joke songs and White Stripes covers (just two days before, Conan recorded a album with ). There was even Meatloaf‘s bat out of hell inflatable. Hideously awesome.

When the show ended, the audience demanded more, so Team Coco obliged with a cover of The Band‘s “The Weight.” During an instrumental break, Conan went out to give hugs and high fives to the audience. A nice gesture, but one that almost got him killed as people swarmed him for a chance to touch that infamous red hair. But he handled it well and was all smiles as 15 minutes later he worked his way back to the stage. Too funny; too cute.

When I came out from the Comedy Theatre, the soulful singer and pianist Norah Jones was performing on the Which Stage. Unfortunately for the talented writer, her tunes aren’t the best to experience in the sun outdoors. They became swallowed up in the dead air and she became more like bore – ah Jones, not Norah.

Disappointed with Jones, I returned back to the trusty comedy tent to catch the Bonnaroo Roast with Roastmaster Jeffrey Ross. Ross did a funky walk out to to some jam music freezing to point at an audience member, “Ugly,” then the sign interpreter at the front, “Deaf,” then himself, “Fat,” before going up to twirl with his attractive female stagehand, “Yeah.” The Roast was pretty funny and Jeff took the time to make fun of Bonnaroo bands, people in the audience, himself and even the heads of Superfly productions: “Nice work, guys. Really. You got thousands and thousands of people to come, but only have seven bars of soap.” He even took a jab at Jay-Z: “Think he’ll perform Empire State of Mind for like the millionth time? Always ripping off “New York State of Mind. He’s not Jay-Z. He’s fucking lazy.” Also, I must say, that sign interpreters have the hardest job at the fest. The comedians sure put this interpreter through some uncomfortable hand gestures.

As fun as it was to take a laugh at ourselves, I ventured out of the Roast a little early to catch some of the talented Avett Brothers. They’ve got some beautiful harmonies going with their blend of bluegrass rock and I love their use of strings on their songs.

Speaking of great harmonies, Mumford and Sons owned That Tent with their performance. The UK group absolutely blew me away and I think it is just a matter of time before these labelmates of Phoenix blow up. They play pretty mellow folk music a la style, but they still brought plenty of rock, with one member lifting his upright bass above his head while playing it…those things aren’t light. The band seemed to be having a great time and so did the audience. This was just one of those feel good performances and perhaps one of my top performances of the fest.

Jack White’s current project, The Dead Weather, with The Kills soon took over the What Stage. Jack White primarly plays drums in this project, proving that the man can and will do absolutely everything in music with near perfection. He does come out from behind the set to sing and even play guitar. However, with how big of a name as White is, Mosshart was the star. The woman prowled the stage while singing, cigarette down to her side, making her look and even soundlike the classic movie image of those smoky lounge singers – and I do mean that as a compliment. I love how her voice fits into this southern rock style. In fact, I like her much more in this than I do in the Kills, and from the looks of it, she seems to enjoy this more, too.

Allison Mosshart if The Dead Weather by Joshua Hammond

Weezer is not how you typical think of rockers, with their frontman being a Harvard graduate and a stereotypical image of a geek as opposed to one of those high school drop out rock stars that don the leather jackets and always have a flask of Jack Daniels at their side. But I’m glad this band has managed to defy stereotypes to become one of the biggest, and longest lasting groups around. Almost every song in their very long set list has been successful on the radio – these guys just know how to write a catchy tune. Their set was also improved by the change that has come over Rivers in the last six years. When I first saw the band in 2005, though the songs were familiar and catchy, the performance was stale. The band just did not seem into it. Now, six years later, it is like they’re a whole new band. Rivers has a renewed energy and wonderment – almost like a kid at an amusement park. “Hello, plane. Hello, plane with banner behind that plane!” shouted Rivers. At another point, he stole the camera from a photog in the pit and snapped a crowd shot. Then, his quirkiness hit a new extreme during the encore when the band played a mash of “Kids” by MGMT and “Poker Face,” by . When he got to the Gaga lyrics, Rivers put on a blonde wig and began thrashing around. Hilarious. I love when music is simply fun.

Speaking of fun, how about the epicness that is Stevie Wonder? The crowd at Bonnaroo tends to run a little younger, so the demographic here kind of missed out on Wonder’s prime, but that doesn’t mean everyone wasn’t still excited about the legend’s performance. I think everyone was surprised by how many of the tunes we all knew and Wonder did a great job of helping the crowd singalong.

Kanye. This is how it is done. Rapper Jay-Z started about ten minutes late. That’s it. And it was ’s fault for starting his set late. Then Jay-Z played a set full of his hits and he was nice about it. No attitude. He thanked Wonder, fellow artists like Alicia Keys for their help on his record. We bounced with him. We froze him. We sang with him. It was great. The only disappointment was that with Beyonce side stage for all the set, it was a bit of a bummer that she didn’t come out and join him for any of the female vocal spots on his tunes. It’s not like we were promised that, but it would have been cool.

As hard as it was to part from Jay-Z, there will some other great performances getting ready to start over at the tents.Thievery Corporation got people dancing with a blend of India-influenced DJ beats and their singer’s strong vocals amping the crowd up. However, this performance couldn’t even begin to compare to the crazy dance parties that were about to erupt over at This Tent.

Dan Deacon Ensemble was interesting to say the least. The stage was covered with xylophones and drums and keyboards as well as a glowing, green skull. Like I said, interesting. Before even playing a song, tried to put everyone in the same mood: “Put your fist in the air. Then point your finger. Now put your left foot just behind your right foot. Now rock back and forth. Now rock down so you’re on your knees.” We all obliged, chuckling. Well, we all obliged save one guy in a white hat: “Too cool for this,” said Deacon. “Everyone point at this guy. Now stare at this guy.” It was weird, but bizarrely fun. After this “crowd bonding” moment was over, the ensemble finally exploded into their crazy dance jams. At some point in your life, go see with the full ensemble. It will probably blow your mind and be one of the best moments of your life.

Dan Deacon wasn’t the only one with crazy stage theatrics. Gwar was playing a stage over from Deacon. The nordically clothed rockers began with a video history of their odd inception. Then the costumed warriors appeared, showering everyone in waves of blood and rock. Even the Bonnaroo Fountain got in on the crazy action and was turned red for the night with LED lights.

But for those wanting to dance into the twilight hours, the party was at This Tent. DJ Deadmau5 was playing the his beats well past 5 a.m. to an enthusiastic crowd covered in glow sticks. The mysterious wore giant mouse ears and sat high up on the stage in DJ booth. It was like he was the electronic lord and we were his dancing minions. He held such power. With a raise of his arms, we’d dance harder and faster. He was still going strong by the time I finally made it back to my tent to rest for the final day of Bonnaroo.

Jack White, Jay Z collaborate

Alternative rocker is not one to sit idle, nor is Hip hop music mogul . The two constantly have new solo and group projects in the works and for the first time their musical giant paths have converged.

In a recent interview with GQ, Jack White revealed that he just recorded a new song with Jay Z:

“We did a song together a few weeks ago. It was incredible. I played him something that I’ve been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with words for it. It’s unbelievable sounding.”

Both are set to appear at this year’s Bonnaroo music festival. Could a special performance of the tune be in the works as well? We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

No word on the song’s release yet, but we’ll definitely keep you posted as it is sure to be .

The 2010 for has been revealed.

Jay-Z, and the will headline the festival that stretches from Friday, April 16 to , April 18 in Indio, California. Other notable performances include as part of their tour and ????, and though his name is still followed by several question marks, he is there. That is seriously the name of his new solo-band project.

n-pbj8From the get-go, I liked “Nothing to Worry About” by an awful lot the first time I ever heard it. Interestingly, this band from has stated that the song, with backing from a children’s choir, started out as a homage to Jay-Z‘s “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem).” But I think you will agree with me that PB&J’s “Nothing to Worry About” sounds nothing like Jay-Z’s 1998 opus. A look back at the 10-year history of this Swedish trio and you will see their influences and approaches to making pop music are so varied among the three of them, and they are musical chameleons that keep changing their sound and never seem to stay in one place. Here’s an example: their fourth album, Seaside Rock (with an extremely limited release in America) was purely instrumental. But that’s what makes them so original and intriguing.

In May, I missed the chance to see PB&J at a sold-out show at the 9:30 just weeks after their fifth album containing “Nothing to Worry About,” Living Thing, had been released. (The night of the 9:30 show, I was a couple blocks away at the Black Cat covering , another favorite of mine). So was I thankful when I heard the band would be starting their celebratory “10 years in the music business” birthday tour in Washington and I’d be there to see them this time around.

a-epdm1, fellow Swede ‘s solo project, was the opener for the night. I don’t know if it’s the 9:30 Club, but this was yet another show there that I felt the bass was too heavy in the mix. Upon further listening to the recorded version of El Perro del Mar’s “Change of Heart,” you will find some of her songs tend to be bass-heavy anyhow, so if you like sultry, bass-driven rock, definitely check out her Love is Not Pop, released in America on October 20. Assbring and her three-piece backing band started their set with “Let Me In,” Assbring contributing what felt like very shy vocals that were in sharp contrast to her shaking her body to every one of the backbeats. I don’t know if it was nerves and shyness or fear, but she sipped a glass of wine with her back to the stage and talked little between songs, not saying much at all except to thank PB&J for choosing her to tour with them, and then she and the band left the stage rather abruptly.

l-pbj6About 20 minutes passed and then the lights dimmed for Peter Bjorn and John. Their backdrop magically appeared – a black cloth with “PETER BJORN AND JOHN” at the top and “BACKDROP” repeated over and over again in white letters; if you’ve seen the cover for Living Thing, this will make more sense. The crowd chanted “PB&J! PB&J! PB&J!” Bearded and extremely tall Björn Yttling (bass and synths) strapped on his bass guitar and deadpanned, “I’m Björn.” The audience cheered. Then he turned to point at his bandmates, “That’s John. And that’s Peter.” As if the audience needed a roll call. More cheering. Then the trio got to work, launching into “Amsterdam,” from the 2006 album that broke them, Writer’s Block. Peter Morén, guitarist and usual lead vocalist, was footloose and fancy free all evening, his white sneakers pounding the stage in a somewhat dizzying spectacle, as sometimes he would be onstage and sometimes he’d be rocking out on one of the big speakers on either end of the stage that you knew were positioned just so he could show off. After the second song, Morén quipped, “This [Washington D.C.] is the best place in the world!“, which of course elicited wild cheers from the crowd. The club was abuzz in excitement all night long.

In “I Want You,” another track from the current album, drummer John Ericksson assumed lead vocal duties, with Morén’s guitar providing another “voice” if you will that complemented Ericksson’s perfectly. “Young Folks,” now a mainstay at indie dance nights, exceeded my expectations; the vocals done so well by (formerly of ) on record were replaced by Sarah Assbring, whose own dance moves matched Morén’s in energy. Kids on the floor were dancing and waving their arms without abandon for this and “Nothing to Worry About,” a soon-to-be club dance classic. In a word: brilliant.

“Lay It Down” became a club-wide singalong with its humorous chorus of “Hey shut the fuck up boy / you’re starting to piss me off / take your hands off that girl / you’ve already had enough“; during this, Morén danced about with his guitar in a fashion. Before the encore, we got a special treat. Morén explained that they had never played any song from Seaside Rock in America, and they were going to play “Needles and Pins” from that album, complete with a guest band, (four guys equipped with two saxophones, a clarinet, and kazoos). When they returned for the encore, they decided to play “Paris 2004,” Morén saying they didn’t play this too often live and that he wasn’t sure if he knew all the notes. But the trio played the song gorgeously, and like all the other songs of the night, it appeared effortless.

At the end of the show, Morén unexpectedly threw his guitar to the ground, jumped on one of the big speakers, and shouted, “Now I’m going to the merch table!” At that point, I was expecting a riot as patrons predictably flooded the merch table in the back, hoping to get a photo with Morén or an autograph. Turned out all three of them patiently took photos with fans and signed anything put in front of them. Truly a class act. Peter Bjorn and John, hope you come back to D.C. in the very near future, we would be happy to have you back.

Built to Spill, Brandi Carlile, Ingrid Michaelson, Thievery Corporation, Joshua Radin and Sondre Lerche join (RED)Nights concert series

, Brandi Carlile, , Thievery Corporation, and are the latest artists to join the (RED)NIGHTS concert series. They join Fall Out Boy, , and others for ’s series of 26 concerts in the U.S. to help fight AIDS in Africa.rednights A portion of the proceeds from each show goes directly to the Global Fund.

For the first set of shows, Fall Out Boy, Katy Perry, Gomez, Santigold, , Lisa Hannigan, , and each turned one of their concerts (RED) to bring the (RED) experience to life in a new way. At each of these shows, (RED)NIGHTS and the community of acclaimed artists aimed to inspire fans to participate in (RED)’s mission to eliminate AIDS in Africa by pausing to highlight the many ways to get involved and encouraging those in the audience to share the message and experience with others.

“I believe no person deserves to suffer from a preventable, treatable disease simply because they can’t afford medicine,” said Marc Roberge of O.A.R. “If bringing awareness to what (RED) is doing helps one person receive antiretroviral treatment and live a healthy life, we have accomplished our goal.”

Ultimately, it is the goal of (RED)NIGHTS to build a community—of artists, concertgoers and music fans everywhere—that is passionate about helping to fight AIDS in Africa. A portion of the proceeds of each (RED)NIGHTS concert goes directly to the Global Fund.

The (RED)NIGHTS series is an innovative concept that combines the power of Live Nation’s live music platform and venues to use people’s passion for music to raise awareness and, ultimately, generate more money to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.” said Russell Wallach, President of North American Alliances for Live Nation. “We’re building a great line up of artists for (RED)NIGHTS, and believe we can help (RED) successfully deliver its message by connecting them with music fans all over the country.”

Under Cover – Sampling Edition, Part 2

         

Welcome back, readers!  The summer is winding down and I’m still listening to danceable hip hop and R&B jams that make me want to shake my tailfeather on the dance floor.  Well, kitchen floor really.  Last week I unleashed a Sampling Edition, Part 1 to whet your musical appetites and had so much fun that I decided I’d double down on your asses with a two-parter.  Not for the A.D.D. musical aficionado, these tracks featuring a plethora of samples in unique and unlikely capacities.  Sometimes it’s fun just trying to see if you can figure out what part of the song belongs to which artist.  Either way, it’s a luscious mix of sounds and beats that make some of your favorite songs a tad more danceable.  And that’s always good.sampling_01

.Destiny’s Child - “Bootylicious”

Who doesn’t love that chugging guitar riff that sets the tone of the Stevie Nicks classic “Edge of Seventeen?”  Apparently, Destiny’s Child wanted to pay homage to one of the foremothers of rock n’ roll by pilfering the sound for the intro of “Bootylicious,” a cheeky video that actually features a cameo of Miss Nicks herself.  As is the case with all great art, ironically Nicks and her writing team were subconsciously channelling their inner- as it’s been said that the guitar and drum parts sound eerily similar to ‘s “Bring On The Night” and they only realized it afterwards.  Wow, I wasn’t ready for that jelly.

One of my favorite hip hop artists of all time (may he rest!), Notorious B.I.G. enlisted the help of some of his Bad Boy family members to create one of the more memorable hip hop and rock mash-ups from the 1990′s that is the quintessential personal anthem of his own self-proclaimed notoriety.  Big up to Biggie for being able to make narcissistic songs so damn catchy by sampling a Duran Duran chorus and jangly guitar licks.  Or was it Puff Daddy‘s idea?  After all, he does claim to have invented the remix.

Oh Jay-Z, can you ever do wrong?  It’s a  song like this that makes me wonder what the hell does Talking Heads lead singer have to say about this?  It takes balls to sample Talking Heads for a hip hop song about maxin’, relaxin’ and chillaxin’.  Apparently Jay and Memphis Bleek borrow from a Kraftwerk song (“The Hall Of Mirrors”) here too so the musical sample is essentially an ambitious composite of the two.  Does Jay-Z really listen to new wave and synthpop?  If so, holler back, young’n.

.Puff Daddy feat. – “Been Around The World”

This track may be too slow to do the Harlem shuffle, but it still does make me long for the golden days of 90′s hip hop.  With the help of then bromantic musical partner Mase, Puff Daddy had innovation on his mind when he laced this track with the inventive music of David Bowie‘s classic “Let’s Dance,” while stealing the chorus from Lisa Stansfield’s soft-rock hit “Been Around The World.”  Whatever happened to her?  Is she still looking for her baby?  Does Puff Daddy have a soft spot for the light music station?  This is another example of odd musical pairings that totally work and leave it to Puffy to pioneer the art of musical interpolation and mixing the unlikeliest songs.

It was hard selecting a sample of DJ Girl Talk‘s dizzying, creative as hell, genius mash-up tracks off Feed The Animals, but “Shut The Club Down” is one of my favorite tracks.  In this one song he samples everyone from Avril Lavigne, Aphex Twin, Jay-Z, Rod Stewart, Butthole Surfers and Ray J, among others.  I chose to feature the Aphex Twin track because he selects the breakdown of the incredible “Girl/Boy Song” during this track’s breakdown, while lacing in Rich Boy’s “Throw Some D’s.”  Girl Talk finds a way to satisfy any type of musical enthusiast: 80s, rock, hip hop, synthpop, and pop.  I can’t wait to finally catch a set of his at Street Scene San Diego next month.  I’m going to wear my “Engineers Do It Better” t-shirt and hope he picks me out of the audience to jump in his inflatable raft and crowd surf.  Sigh, I love me some Girl Talk.

All Points West – Day 1: Reign O’er Me

With ominous clouds looming overhead and the threat of a tornado, it seemed that only the most dedicated of music fans trekked to Liberty State Park in New Jersey for the second annual Music and Arts Festival. The festival, organized by the same crew who run , has struggled to define itself as an East Coast contender, this year boasting a noticeably heavier and more hip-hop inspired lineup.


Before the storm hit, Fleet Foxes took the main stage looking gorgeous in full grunge regalia, wizard beards and tattered flannel, and pulling somewhat of a Déjà vu on us as they sweetly echoed the lush harmonies of . Some say circa Pet Sounds, some say CSN–either way, I was in lust with the ornate detail in their rising, earthen sound; more hopeful than haunting. As the first light drops of rain began to fall and we donned our fancy five-dollar ponchos, the atmospheric, ethereal hymns of Fleet Foxes warmed me despite the murky mud my feet were slowly sinking into.

Ra Ra Riot
I was downright giddy when Ra Ra Riot, who have become one of my favorite bands of the past year, hit the stage with their triumphant cover of ’s “Suspended in Gaffa”. The perfect marriage of quirk and skill, Ra Ra Riot and Kate Bush equal crazy genius. With a fully plugged in string section, ’ chirping, blue-bird balladry and princely presence, Ra Ra Riot is a kind of modern day band of minstrels, redefining indie-pop as we speak. Was that a bagpipe I saw on stage? Wait, a flageolet?

Interlude 1: Happy Hippy Techno Trance Dance Party
All throughout the park there were “Burning man raised” and inspired sculptures that became makeshift rain shelter spots. Hordes of people, including myself a few times, sardined themselves under tiny winged tarps attached to tepees made of glowing branches. Inside one of these pulsing tepees was a DJ spinning a house, trance, pop goulash. It was the dance party that didn’t stop. At any point throughout the weekend you could walk by and find hundreds of people giving it all they had in the mud.


My expectations for The National and the gift of were extremely high. Before Friday, I had never seen them and I, among many, hold The Boxer near and dear. For years friends have been telling me that live, The National will blow me away. They did not lie. It couldn’t have been a more perfect setting to take them in for the first time. Berninger’s baritone seemed to call the darkening rain clouds in closer and it began to downpour as the band tore through their set with certainty. The rousing intensity of the music and the heaviness of the rain began to make sense. The whole scene was gritty, rough, and completely anti. There was something romantic about committing oneself to the music despite the threatening sky as Berninger sang apocalyptic melancholy with menace.

I was excited to finally see the complete and original Pharcyde crew performing together after all the breakups and makeups the band has gone through. I have fond memories of listening to “Passin’ Me By” while passing a… With my baby bro, once again by my side, we rocked our plastic hoodies with pride as we “raised ‘em up” respectfully. The of these hip-hop legends had the boys throwing rhymes in the face of “those who thought we’d never sing together again.”

Interlude 2
As the rain got heavier, bulleting and beating us down, we took refuge in the State Farm tent. While wringing out our socks, announced that due to the rain, all Friday ticket holders have a free pass to attend the festival for one more day. All Points West: good peeps.


A definite highlight and I’ll fight you on this if I have to. If you haven’t seen jujitsu posturing, body thrashing, equipment trashing, going completely psychotic, crazy, melt-downing on stage in front of you, well, you just don’t have the ammo I’m afraid. Yeah (yeah yeah!) this lady is cra-hazy, but she’s nuts in the way that ground breaking, mind-bending, authentic art is conceived. After watching her perform standouts like Heads “Will Roll”, “Zero” and “Maps”, it’s clear that she rocks with her heart on her sleeve, in every awkward yet honest moment she’s on stage. There’s a kind of rawness to both the sound and the performance that is rare. That juiciness is usually tapped by the time artists are throwing giant eyeball balloons off the stage and headlining festivals. My fingers are crossed that this chick stays bananas, for arts, our, sake.

Interlude 3
The rain is off the charts at this point. People have traded moshing for belly flopping in giant mud puddles. It’s a hipster wet tee-shirt contest if I ever did see one.


While most performers gave a shout out or two to The Beasties and MCA in particular, no one shouted quite as loud as Hova. By the end of day one, my feet were literal bricks of mud. As the rain subsided a chill moved in. Still soggy and beginning to lose steam, this last set of the night needed to be huge. People bought to see and Jay definitely had some super sized Adidas Campus’ to fill. With the twinkling Manhattan skyline and Lady Liberty as his backdrop Jay Z stormed the stage and opened his set, a full band behind him including a three-piece horn section and two drummers, with “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”. Exactly. Car alarms, cats, the entire crowd, and pretty much the whole state of Jersey went absolutely feral. MCA, I hope you were watching ‘cause we love you. This much I know for sure: Jay Z is a certifiable superstar. With tributes to both Obama and MJ, classics plucked from across his entire catalog, and graphics of autotone machines blowing up on the Jumbotron screen, Hova owned the night.
