Del Marquis of Scissor Sisters is going to be releasing a series of solo EPs through online retailers the first Tuesday of every month from December through April. Each sunny pop EP will be released with a series of episodic videos to expose the seedy underbelly of pop.
The EPs include collaborations with Joan As Police Woman and Basement Jaxx vocalists Vula Malinga anf Sharlene Hector. The first EP, “Hothouseâ€, will be released December 2. The title track addresses how gay rights were used as a divisive tool by the Bush administration and the society of fear his Administration created.
Del and Embryoroom Multimedia Group have created a series of digital motion shorts will be released in an episodic form with each EP. The video project has a sci-fi edge that compliments the pop sheen of the EPs . The initial episode that accompanies the “Hothouse†EP features the original track but future episodes will also showcase reinterpretations or Shadows of the tracks. The shorts make up the projects “Shadow†and tell a linear story.
In the first video Del plays a character named ‘Viz,’ shackled as his train speeds towards an unknown destination. Why he is a prisoner and of whom remains a mystery. Viz passes in and out of consciousness, as waking and dreaming are a blur. His memory is manipulated and his identity scanned by a figure in the darkness. As Viz is identified and his visions absorbed, he seemingly becomes an image of his own fear. Be forewarned that there is a disclaimer with the video that it may cause seizures (that’s how you know it’s good!).
The video is currently available for purchase at www.delmarquis.com and www.embryoroom.com. The EP/video bundles will be available through various online retailers starting with the first EP on December 2.

Last week, Joan Wasser, best known as Joan As Policewoman, kicked of a headlining tour in support of her latest release To Survive. Of the album, Wasser says, “I am always trying to dig deeper into the emotional experience. I want to access the most honest place I can, distill it and present it in a way that makes sense musically.”
The emotional connection Wasser has with her music is clear in her facial expressions as she performs often heart-wrenching songs, many on the new album written in the shadow of her mother’s battle with cancer, which ended in her death last year. The album centers on Joan as piano player and singer as did her performance Friday night. The sweet piano-driven ballads were also countered with tunes in which Joan picked up the guitar and rocked hard with drummer Parker Kindred.
The fiery redhead took to the stage in a shiny purple jumpsuit with a self-embroidered pattern she was proud of and tan suede cowboy boots with fringe that had someone in the audience liken her to Nancy Sinatra. In between random stage banter that drew much laughter from the audience, Wasser held her audience rapt with honest lyrics and intensely emotional vocals that at times reminded me of equal parts Regina Spektor and Thao Nguyen with a sultry tinge of Fiona Apple.
