LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening

LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening

And so it comes to LCD Soundsystem‘s third and purported final . When you’re and your previous musical work is the much adored Sound of Silver and you follow it up with your final piece of art, you better go out with a bang. And from the get go Mr. Murphy understands this fact and hesitates not to throw a handful of glitter and confetti into the visual components of our ears.

was not recorded in New York’s DFA studios but rather the sprawling mansion of producer Rick Rubin. And lets clear up an important fact before we discuss and delve into the finiteness of this album. It’s no Sound of Silver, but it doesn’t need to be. When you put out an album that is that sonically impressive, both lyrically and melodically, you don’t need your next one to be as such. You’ve cemented your greatness and your place in the world’s musical oeuvre. All you need to do is underline the fact that you can still craft a few fantastic tunes and that your talent isn’t limited to a fluke. That’s exactly what This Is Happening does. It doesn’t try to be better than its predecessor, but it sure comes close.

The album starts off with a subtle sneakiness with “ Yrself Clean.” The track begins and continues for a while to be a slow, quiet puff of breath: a “What, I can’t hear you?” number. You think to yourself, “ makes dance music. What is this nonsense?” And your heart sinks a little to think Mr. Murphy has faulted you. The song pitter-patters a bit, joined by spoken vocals, but then the track starts to pick up a little, with soft whistling keyboards that run like a river through the quiet. You feel there might be hope and then when 3:08 hits you are jolted like a mother f*cker with probably the best dance music in a long time. A smack of snare drums that are quickly quenched by some of the deepest fuzzed out synths this side of downtown. The song is a dancefloor cracker. Murphy starts to sing with a “I just woke up from a boozy night” voice and firmly tells you to “Dance yourself clean” from such an evening and perhaps, aptly for him, to take stock of his place in the musical scene as a 40 year old man, as he sings: “Everybody’s getting younger/It’s the end of an era, it’s true.” Amongst this philosophical question of age and place, amongst the filthy percussion, also lies a romantic tune: “Break me into bigger pieces/So some of me is home with you,” a nice juxtaposition between the music and lyrics. “Dance Yrself Clean” is a winner and gets you ready for the rest.

The album follows with “Drunk ,” a fun-filled track of nonsense about night out on the town shenanigans, where lacking in lyrics and vocals it makes up in a rocking your head kind of musical style. “One Touch” harks back to Sound of Silver‘s “Get Innocuous”; what an 8 bit LCD Soundsystem game would sound like. “All I Want” is a bruising sentimentality, mixing rock and dance, evoking the guitar work from Bowie‘s “Heroes,” with Murphy youthfully pouring out thoughts over a doomed relationship: “All I want is your pity/Oh all I want are your bitter tears.” It is a beautiful track with a softness that permeates through the callousness of the singer.

“All I Want” leads into another soft stunner, the album’s second best track, “I Can Change,” which showcases the best singing we’ve heard from Murphy since “All My Friends.” Mr. Murphy needs to croon us like this more often because it really is a wonderful vox box. He fills the track with bubbling synthesizers, a la Gary Numan‘s “Cars,” while coaxing a young thing, “I can change, I can change, if it helps you fall in love.” The song also starts off with some of the best lyrics I’ve heard in a while, “Tell me a line/Make it easy for me/Open your arms/Dance with me until I feel alright.”

“Hit” opens with a sparkle of Asian infused melodies eventually being drowned out by a thick, slobbering bass, as Murphy belts his Fuck You ode to record labels, “You wanted a hit/Well this is how we do hits/You wanted a hit/But that’s not what we do/So leave us alone”. The following two tracks, “Pow Wow” and “Somebody’s Calling Me,” though musically well composed, leave something to be desired.

This Is Happening ends with “What You Need,” and so comes the close of LCD Soundsystem’s offerings to the world, and it closes perfectly, with a neat, nostalgic period. The track perfectly dissipates Murphy’s thoughts over the years of his and his bands stature and significance in the music world, the idea of aging and coming to grips with moving on to the next stages of life, but pondering what sort of legacy was left and what the future holds, leaving us with…”You might forget/Forget the sound of our voice/Still you should not forget, yet/Don’t forget the things that we laughed about.”

This Is Happening will be released on May 17, 2010.

Friendly Fires / Holy Ghost! – 12” Split Single

Friendly Fires / Holy Ghost! – 12” Split Single

I have a love/hate relationship with evening show host . He often gets on my nerves because he likes to shout. A lot. I chalk this up to the fact that he has the privilege of talking to rock stars on a regular basis, and should I ever get a cushy job like that, I would probably be overexcited and shouty as well. However, I digress. It’s thanks to Lowe’s regular choosing of the “Hottest Record in the World” (at 7:30 PM GMT most evenings Monday through Thursday) that I get to hear some of the most hotly-tipped songs before their official release. And here is a prime example of his good taste – PopWreckoning favorites covering !‘s now classic “Hold On,” which was chosen as a “Hottest Record” for February 4.

I’ve done research in the blogosphere and heard quite a bit about the backstory of this single from interviews the BBC did last month with Friendly Fires‘s (vocals / bass / synths). What I’ve gathered is that the two acts ran into each other last summer at the music Calvi on the Rocks in Corsica. It’s unclear which parties were inebriated but Holy Ghost!‘s made the suggestion of recording covers of each other’s songs. Macfarlane, a self-admitted fanatic of Holy Ghost!‘s work, concurred. Further, Macfarlane told a BBC 6music news reporter that he spent so much time and effort remixing ‘s “Fences” that given the choice, his preference with respect to Holy Ghost! was to do “a proper reinterpretation” of one of their songs rather than simply a remix.

You may wonder, “if they talked about doing this last summer, why is it taking so long for it to be released?” Further in the folklore is that Friendly Fires, so enthused about the project, got their cover finished quickly. However, Holy Ghost!‘s recording of their track was riddled by bad luck. Word on the street is that their already recorded session tapes and vocal tracks vanished, and they suffered a hard drive meltdown. It should also be noted that there was further delay caused by the untimely death of !!!/ drummer . (Incidentally, the “On Board” track is one of the last recordings Fuchs played on.)

If you’ve listened to Friendly Fires‘s “Paris” as many times as I have, the intro to their cover of Holy Ghost!’s “Hold on” should sound welcome as an old friend. The pronounced bass line, as well as winning cowbell and agogô – hallmarks of tracks by this act – make this cover memorably different than the original. The disco dancefloor vibe and the short-sounding lyrics have gone, replaced by in-your-face percussion (thanks to surely one of music’s hardest-working drummers, ) and sexy as hell lead vocals. ‘s guitar riffs three-quarters of the way in are also a totally appreciated addition.

duo Holy Ghost! decided they wanted to put their own stamp on the Friendly Fires‘s boisterous singalong “On Board.” (You may recall hearing the original on commercials for the Wii Fit and Gran Turismo 5.) Their take features, as should be expected from them, a disco sensibility; however, it also comes complete with angelic female voices credited as “the DFA Celestial Choir,” lending a vocal richness not present in the original. The lead vocal is more intelligible as well. (Sorry , but if someone hadn’t told me the lyrics included “without your own defiling / you’d backwards circle right above our heads“, I never would have guessed). I also really dig the tacking-on of the catchy, repeated “Don’t stop! Don’t stop!” squarely in the middle of the track.

Because of the mutual admiration Friendly Fires and Holy Ghost! have for each other, I think it’s safe to say that should these two dance music acts ever decide to go on tour together, that would make for one hell of a bill.

The “Hold On” / “On Board” double-A-sided single will be released on 12″ vinyl and digitally on March 8 by XL Recordings. Check out the original versions of both below (Holy Ghost! don’t have a promo for “Hold On” so only audio is available for that one.)

LCD Soundsystem’s Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs dies

LCD Soundsystem’s Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs dies

(Entertainment Weekly) — Thirty-four-year-old Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs, a beloved fixture of both the New York and Athens, Georgia, rock scenes who played with , !!! (pronounced Chk Chk Chk), , , and , died Saturday night in a fall after attempting to crawl out of a broken elevator shaft at a benefit party in Brooklyn. *Nov 08 - 00:05*

Fuchs, who also freelanced at Entertainment Weekly, was a house drummer of sorts for progressive record label DFA, as well as a member of long-running Athens post-rock outfit .

On the Juan MacLean Web site, MacLean wrote: “Jerry was one of my best and most loyal friends. He was hands-down the best drummer I have ever played with or seen for that matter … He was utterly sincere and fiercely loyal.”

According to The New York Times, the accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. on November 8, when Fuchs became stuck on a freight elevator between the fourth and fifth floors. When he attempted to jump out of the stalled car, his jacket got caught and threw him back towards the elevator shaft, while another unidentified man in the car with him leaped safely to a fourth-floor hallway.

At a gathering for Fuchs’ friends on Sunday night, LCD frontman called him “one of the only people we all knew who was literally great at what he did.”

And longtime friend Jon Fine noted, “He could play metal, prog rock with multiple time signatures, aggressive indie disco. … His passing puts an enormous hold on the Brooklyn music scene. The world of independent music has sustained a really significant loss.”

Edie Sedgwick – Things Are Getting Sinister and Sinisterer

Edie Sedgwick – Things Are Getting Sinister and Sinisterer

is an entertaining smart-ass.

Moyer’s been releasing music as (I assume we’re all familiar with the Warholian supermodel/superstar originally of this name) since 2001. True to Warholian philosophy, Moyer has been examining the various aspects of fame and celebrity in the music he makes under the Sedgwick moniker. On Things Are Getting Sinister And Sinisterer, the songs he writes are often as entertaining as they are intelligent. Often they’re more the former than the latter, but don’t hold that against him.

It’s easy to listen to TAGSAS and not pick-up on anything that Moyer’s saying just because the music holds it’s own so well. Moyer creates killer beats that he layers beautifully with sharp bass lines, synths and his always-spot-on vocal delivery. Every track, other than the chill closer “Edie Sedgwick II”, bristles with a -rock energy of quality.

When one does actually repress the desire to dance enough to listen to what Moyer’s saying, his insight in regards to his subject matter is interesting, such as in “Angelina Jolie” where he sings “condescend to say when…the line between good works and publicity,” about her adoption of children from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam. At other times Moyer can be hilariously bitter, like when he sings about Mary-Kate Olsen’s anorexia in (you guessed it) “Mary-Kate Olsen”, musing, “good g-ddamn, the cocaine is the culprit / great g-ddamn, the cocaine is the culprit / good g-ddamn, the tweenies are a culprit / great g-ddamn, the meanies are a culprit / good g-ddam, Jared Leto is a culprit…” And then sometimes he’ll just have fun, like when he sings about the cheeseball 80’s anti-communist movie Red Dawn, in a song of the same name.

It’s interesting that Moyer chose to perform under the Sedgwick moniker. Sedgwick is a tragic and peculiar figure in modern pop culture; seemingly destroyed by fame, she spent much of the last years of her life recovering from drug abuse and in psychiatric care. Moyer, however, deals more in comedy than he does in tragedy, though there is an admittedly dark side in some songs such as the aforementioned “Mary-Kate Olson”. At times the argument could be made that the two overlap, perhaps due to the irony of how fame – something many people would (literally) die for – often destroys, both mentally and physically, those who achieve it.

While an artist with a philosophy is always cool, it only goes so far unless the work itself is quality. Luckily, Edie Sedgwick’s TAGSAS is a kick-ass dance that satisfies the head while keeping the ass in shake.

Things Are Getting Sinister and Sinisterer will be released by Dischord Records on November 11, 2008.

01. Sissy Spacek
02. Mary-Kate Olsen

I would love to hear our readers thoughts on this list, as I personally disagree with several selections. I was shocked to not find Sigur Ros and their amazing live show on this list. Also, where is Wilco, Explosions in the Sky and Broken Social Scene?

Furthermore, I completely disagree with placing Red Hot Chili Peppers above Radiohead AND White Stripes. But, above all, I think what floored me the most about this list was their placing 16th, under bands like The Hives, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and My Chemical Romance. To me that’s just unthinkable. In my opinion, The Lips are a top five live show, hands down.

Readers, what do you think? What would your list look like? I’m curious.
