Lollapalooza 2011: Saturday Revisited

Lollapalooza 2011: Saturday Revisited

at Lollapalooza starts with just as much mental excitement, but unfortunately, the body is already starting to feel a bit drained from the long hours and lots of walking.

When PopWreckoning arrived from our train stop, we could hear from across park, but unfortunately resigned ourselves to being unable to hobble over in time. Instead, we began with Aussie duo An Horse at the Google+ Stage. We’ve seen these guys before and we’re continually impressed by their full sound for just being a drummer and a singer with a guitar. Plus singer Kate Cooper is a force unto herself. That girl can belt.

From two to at least thirteen, the next act we caught was a big change up from An Horse. Portland’s quickly became our favorite discovery at . This ensemble had brass, strings, multiple guitarist and percussionists. They knew how to build-up a song and they knew how to have fun. Put these charming chamber folk musicians on your radar.

We really changed things up as we returned to a group with fewer members and switched out the folk sounds for electronic synthesized ones. got us to dance over by the Sony Stage. The group sparsely uses lyrics, so the focus is all on the sounds and the beats they drop.

But we never stay in one spot too long, much like the singer of the next act we caught: . Singer Ed MacFarlane is one entertaining fellow. He danced as he sang and though the stage was at least 20 feet above the audience, but he jumped down and surfed through the crowd. The rest of the band was pretty content staying out of the crowd and instead focused on delivering a tightly played set. The rhythms dropped by drummer Jack Savidge especially impressed because without those beats, none of the tropical dancing would be possible.

We had some interviews to conduct (which will be posted on PopWreckoning.com soon), so we had to miss Fitz and the Tantrums‘ Lolla set. But we did overhear their jazzy waves all the way in the press area and it sounds like they did two great covers (“Sweet Dreams” and “Steady as She Goes”) that might be worth youtubeing.

After we finished interviewing, we worked our way to the young up-and-comers , and overheard a raucous party over at the tail end of the ‘ set. A lot of those Black Lips fans must have worked their way over to DOM because that stage was just as much of a party as the young group really embraced the rock and roll aesthetic of their synth indie rock.

Just across the way, another synth indie rock act was performing a very different type of . Denver’s Chain Gang of 1974 mixes a lot of different elements into its brand of rock – from American rock to some global influences most noteworthy in the percussion and then a bit of glam dance thrown in.

From here we went to see one of the most anticipated sets of the festival: Death From Above 1979. The newly reunited duo had one of the largest daytime crowds. One donned white and the other embraced black clothes – their appearance reflected the duality of their music – the tug and war of and guitar perfectly balanced out. For a group that’s been away from the stage for some time, you wouldn’t know it from their performance. They were tight and energetic and dripped with passion. From this performance, it was easy to see why DFA has influenced so many other acts to follow.

As cool as the classic acts are at Lolla, we also love checking out the newer ones. Patrick Stump then were next on our agenda. Patrick Stump is a popular son, having built a fanbase with his previous act Fall Out Boy. Now he’s gone R&B, which is well suited for his voice, but it looks like his new backing band has some kinks to work out. The band let stress show through when they were hit with a few technical difficulties. Ellie Goulding is a British singer that many first started hearing about when she performed for the Royal Wedding. We’re kind of on the fence about her. Her original pop songs are great and catchy, but she can do some atrocious covers – particularly her sloppy cover of Elton John’s “Your Song.”

Another new act we caught was . This is the project that has taken Taylor Momsen from the acting stage and onto the music stage. It seems she likes the spotlight more here because she’s given up her role on Gossip Girl to focus on her band. The Pretty Reckless is a glam rock group, but honestly, Taylor’s outfit held our attention more so than the music. Taylor was wearing a very strappy mini-dress that didn’t leave too much too the imagination, but it also did a good job embracing the rockstar image she is working to exude. We just didn’t care for the strained vocals when she goes into a louder rock passage. The girl can sing and it is evident at times, but the attempt to reach for rock isn’t quite effortless yet.

The next band we saw didn’t even bother with singing. blew us away with their instrumental music and belly dancing show. Big drums, strings – this was a great introduction to global music for people who had previously only thought they were cultured after watching one single Bollywood film. The trio’s dancer kept eyes transfixed on her fusion of belly dancing, ballet and jazz. By song two, she amazed yet again by picking up a big bass drum. This is an act that should be seen live if you ever have the chance.

kept us dancing, but more in that ‘sway along to the pleasant music’ type of dancing. Lykke Li had this mystical air about her enhanced by her trash bag like outfit. She was good, but didn’t hook us quite as much as the amazing Beats Antique performance prior.

Just when we thought our feet would give out beneath us, we were hit by a fresh wave of energy at the thought of it being headliner time. We began with  who delivered one of their best sets yet: 2 hours of solid entertainment from these indie rockers. had brought his A-game, sporting a special voice box on his chest and practically prowling about the stage. Across the park, also brought his A-game. Even if you’re like us and rap isn’t your thing, Eminem delivered an entertaining superstar set. He had passion, impeccable timing, charisma and some amazing visuals. The videos during his set were just as entertaining as he was. But one of the greatest highlights was the surprise appearance of singer/guitarist Bruno Mars. It was a fantastic surprise to hear some of the guest vocals performed live instead of listening to pre-recorded tracks.

The last band that we were most excited about was . The brass-loving French band doesn’t tour the states to often, but with a new about to drop, this was our chance to see one of our favorite indie acts live at last. This was almost as enriching as seeing a full orchestra live – french horn, tuba, trombone and more – the songs were beautiful, haunting and a great way to send us off into the dark Chicago night.

Muppets-The-Green-Album

‘Muppets: The Green Album’ up streaming on NPR, featuring Weezer, Sondre Lerche, OK Go

Apparently 2011 is the year the Muppets will rise again.

Smurfs? Meh. Alvin and the Chipmunks? Oh please. But the Muppets – whether or not you were born in their heyday, will always be cool.

And this year will be the year they make their comeback. Remember when was a swashbuckling pirate in “Muppet Treasure Island?” Well I do, and what I remember the most is the , even if it was sung by a bunch of puppets and Dr. Frank-N-Furter himself.

But with a new film out in November written by the hilarious and songs by , and a new of classic circa-1970s Muppets songs covered by some darn good artists, Fozzie Bear better dust off his bow tie.

features the likes of , , playing a groovy extended rendition of the Muppet Show theme song, and , who we all know has a history with the Muppets (see “Keep Fishin’” video), along with Paramore’s performing a charming version of “The Rainbow Connection.”

The Green , out August 23, doesn’t stray from any of the classic songs performed by the Muppets themselves, and manages to bring them all into 2011.

To listen to each song individually or to stream the whole album right now, head on over to NPR.org before you buy the album (because you really should).

Delta Spirit @ The Uptown Theater, Kansas City MO

From 200 to 2,000, Delta Spirit has officially jumped the ranks in the industry. Less than a year ago the band showed up in this area to play a 200 person venue. But last night they took the stage to open the show for veterans . And by the end of the set, nearly 2,000 people had made their way in. A thirty minute set was not nearly enough time, but it did allow them to hit a few awesome selections.

“People C’mon” is found on the Ode To Sunshine and starts off very simplistic with a soulful voice and a single guitar. But it’s the percussion section that makes this song so much fun. Drums and bass are joined at the hip as they blues-ify the melody previously set by that guitar. Then when the keys jumped in and some ”bop-bop-baas” came from the gut of Matthew an instant groove started to take over the band members. It was the vocals chants and drum taps though, that finally got the audience involved.

Now “White Table” is probably what most people would call their single off the recent album History From Below. That drum tap is back and when mixed with a few sultry lyrics, you’re started off with a very soothing melody. The tempo picks up to a great sashay movement. Multiple drum participants are probably to blame for this. On the album one would normally just dance a little during these parts. But when they took this song to the live stage, it was easy to see the true fans in attendance. Because as a fan, one would know that those drums taps were merely a build up for the real break out moment in the song. And thus, as the song gained intensity, a few of us began to jump in anticipation. Eventually everything exploded – song, band members, instruments, and crowd, all of it. The faster they played the fast the crowd danced. The best part of that song actually came at the end and the fact that it wasn’t the end. Of the set that is. It’s common to finish a set with your single. But for Delta, it just flowed among the other great songs.

Second to “White Table” if another favorite had to be picked it would easily be “Trashcan.” And because they’re awesome, the guys busted out an actual trashcan lid for the lead in percussion beats. A barbershop chord progression also came joyfully across the keyboard. Truly though, this song couldn’t have been more expertly placed in the evening. Seeing as by now, a much larger crowd had formed for and what better introduction to Delta than “Trashcan?”

The set ended with “Children” and conveniently brought with it a harmonica. While the general tone of this song is slightly softer than the rest of the set, it still felt very appropriate to end with. Soft rock guitar riffs and light percussion smooth everything out with the delicate vocals. The beauty of this song came smack dab in the middle with a fury of notes creating a guitar sound reminiscent of Airborne Toxic Event which managed to lift everyone away. “You make your own stand, you take your own stand” were a few lyrics that began to be repeated over and over again. Matt wanted to make sure he was really getting his point across to the audience.  And rightfully so, as once or twice, they’re just lyrics – but if you actually hear what he’s saying, you realize that they’re empowering each and every person. Which was pretty cool if you ask me.

Like I said, thirty minutes was not enough for . However they managed to pull out a very excellent set, for both old and new fans.

Deas Vail plans to fourth studio on September 6th with the help of first time producer, Reliant K guitarist and A&R Matthew Hoopes. Monsters of Folk @ Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, IL

Monsters of Folk @ Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, IL

What is there to say about this show? Having the pleasure of seeing three of the best singer/songwriters today share the stage was a surreal experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Going into this show, I really didn’t know what to expect, not having seen any of the acts in any capacity, but the show setup and had the feel of seeing Dylan- you knew you were seeing/experiencing truly special. Monsters of Folk 6

Something really to admire is how the show is structured, shifting from tracks from their self-titled, , into songs from each other’s extensive back catalogue of indie-rock classics. Each of the three, , and had mini sets of acoustic songs with a combination of another member (M. Ward and Jim James harmonies were full of such soul). Of the three M. Ward was the one I was the least familiar with, only knowing him from , but his solo set made me a believer and left the crowd in awe as his solo set, receiving a standing ovation and me making a personal note, “For the love of God, as soon as you get home, get some M. Ward albums.”

As the show hit the 2 hour mark, the M.O.F really hit their stride as Jim James steals the show (with his stellar white boy dance moves that would give Dave Matthews a run for his money), as he leads the band through ‘s Smokin’ From Shootin’ and Monsters of Folk’s Losin’ Yo Head. Not to be outdone, Conor Oberst adds some punch to his verse of Smokin From Shootin’ as M. Ward holds down the keys and guitars rather masterfully.

Monsters of Folk 5

This is a show that completely blew me away: plain and simple. After three hours, Jim James added, “Boy , you sure know how to treat a lady.” experienced something truly special that I will proudly recall for years to come.
