There’s a trend sweeping through indie music: amazing multi-part harmonies. You know that sound that Fleet Foxes and Local Natives tapped into with the simple instrumental layerings of a catchy drum beat and guitar riff enriched with beautiful harmonies like you are gathered around a campfire with friends singing folk songs together? Yeah, that’s the trend I’m talking about and I hope it never stops.
The latest group to really catch my ears has been Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Their single, “Vocal Chords” has quickly risen to the top of my most played list.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. just released a remix EP, My Love Is Easy: Remixes Pt. 1. As a special bonus, they’re offering up a remix of “Vocal Chords” for free download.
Download “Vocal Chords” (Diego and the Dissidents remix) here.
The EP will be followed by their full length debut in Spring 2011.

Fly away and escape reality for a moment with the catchy dance tune “Pigeons” by Brooklyn duo The Hundred in the Hands. The dance pop song is already perfect for clubs, but remix gurus Foals went ahead and added their own spin.
Check out the original version here and then listen to the Foals’ take here. We’ve had both on repeat, but we really love the extension that Foals gives it with its trumpeting music interlude about two minutes in. The descending bass line also gives the song a darker edge than the bubbly original. Adding to the darkness, is the way Foals’ latches on to the lyric, “Fly away,” and uses that to help fade out their six minute take on the song just as they led into it.
“Pigeons” will be on the The Hundred in the Hands’ debut self-titled album due out September 21.
Pre-order the album here.

The drummer from UK electro-pop group, Hot Chip, likes to mix fresh new sounds of the synth with classic pop from thirty years ago.
When their drummer, Rob Smoughton, is not busy with Hot Chip, he’s busy as Grovesnor. As Grovesnor, he produces tunes even more of a throwback to the golden oldies sound he brings to the group, but he still keeps it fresh.
On May 25, Grovesnor will release his solo debut Soft Return. The first single is “Taxi from the Airport” and you can save a remix from Parisian remix master dÉbruit from the link below. It’s sure to make you clap and sing along. The remix and original track are like night and day, but still paint the perfect vibe of a taxi ride.
Expect tour dates from Grovesnor later this year. He plans on returning as a six-piece band after finishing touring with Hot Chip.

Phoenix have remixed Grizzly Bear. Well, kind of. Here’s what they actually had to say about their “remix“:
A long time ago Grizzly Bear asked us to remix one of their tracks, but we never found the boldness to mess with their beautiful songs.
So the other day we figured, maybe if we combine great things together (Grizzly Bear, Eno, chance), it would create something good.
So instead, Phoenix posted these two songs side by side and allow people to kind of create their own remix for them:
I N S T R U C T I O N S
1. Press play on either player
2. After an indefinite number of seconds, press play on other player
3. You can create your own mix by adjusting the volume on either player
4. If it’s good : enjoy, if it’s bad : try again !
It’s pretty fun, so be sure to give it a try.

We love The Antlers and we love Freelance Whales and now we have a happy union of the two.
The Antlers’ Darby Cicci remixed Freelance Whales by piecing together three songs into one. Awesome (these songs were just begging to be remixed)!
.“Killers Whales” -Darby Cicci remix
If you liked this Freelance Whales medley, be sure to check out their Daytrotter session, too: Xylophone and multiple vocals and other adorable indie pop that would make even the Postal Service jealous.

Everything Everything is a British rock band that’s started to get on the scene. I don’t know too much about them, but they’ve had some good tracks out. I don’t even know if they have an album. But the BBC says they are a band to watch out for in 2010.
.Everything Everything – “My Keys, Your Boyfriend”
Love the title of this track. The song is tough to describe. It definitely feels like a pop song, though has a little more edge than typical ones. It’s softer than rock but rockier than electronic music, certainly combing the styles of both. The vocals are somewhere between being sung and rapped. It’s enjoyable and unique.
.Delphic Remix
Delphic’s remix is the reason I found out about the song. Delphic is an electronic group from England, another one hailed by the BBC a band to watch for 2010. Their stuff has been very good so far, certainly evidenced by the remix they do here. They convert the song from the fast, jumpy number it is, into a dreamy, electronic tune. The vocals are bare, focusing on the intro whispers of the original. A haunting mysticism is delivered from Delphic.
.Portmanteau Remix
The Portmanteau remix combines elements of both the original and the Delphic mix in a sense. The rapping/sung style vocals are kepy, the rock aesthetic is gone and an electronic one takes it place. But this is slightly jarring and uncomfortable. The mix here seems confused with too much. It has moments but the main riff could drive someone insane.

Remember The Bravery? “An Honest Mistake,” “Unconditional”? Their ongoing feud with The Killers when both bands came out at the same time? Well, it’s been a while since something good of theirs has been out, including their entire second album. They released their third, Stir The Blood, just the other day, to atrocious reviews. However, I’m quite enjoying the single “Slow Poison.”
.The Bravery – “Slow Poison”
“Slow Poison” is done in The Bravery’s same fashion: a little rock, a little goth and a little synth. It’s an upbeat number, perfect as a summer’s driving song and pretty fun to listen too, especially the guitar breaks. I also like how the song trails off at the end; you never really hear that anymore.
.Of Montreal Remix
So this is a pretty bad remix. I feature it as just an example (though some may like it). Usually Of Montreal just make music; I’ve never heard a remix by them and this might be why. All the sounds jar together and collide with so much noise and fluidity. The mix is heavier, obtuse, with no real style: A remix gone wrong.
.Drop The Lime Remix
A much fuller remix, with electro thumps and tropical drums. The vocals are allowed to follow through like that of the original, but the music is changed to that of the dancing kind. It’s slower, heavier with little fits of speed. It’s slightly spacey, but one that’ll surely be able to have you shaking that still body of yours.
