Black Keys, Cake, Jimmy Eat World rock 107.7 The End’s Deck the Hall Ball 2010

With a lineup like 107.7 The End’s annual had, one should have expected a multi-faceted night of music, which is exactly what we got. That lineup included , The , the return of , , the , and , who closed out the night.

Starting the 6-hour marathon of some of the most played acts on The End was buzzband Sleigh Bells, who clearly had the most attitude out of all the bands. Singer Alexis Krauss sported silver spandex leggings and pristine white Keds and guitarist Derek Miller walked out with jeans and a black hoodie, and brought some of the loudest music I’d ever heard. It was so loud I suspected problems with the sound system, but standing further away from the stage was much better than being right up close where I was. The pairing of Miller and Krauss is an odd one, as Krauss has a hard and sexy stage presence. With how much of their live songs include a backing track, you almost wondered if Miller’s guitar was even on. Even though there were sound issues, it was still nice to see The End giving a newer band a spot at the show.

After that, all the music of the night was basically the playlist that The End has been featuring for the last year – with the bands playing as well as the songs playing during intermissions. When Cee Lo Green’s “F*ck You” played over the PA system (completely uncensored!) all the excited fans squished up against the barrier as well as us photographers in the pit sang along to the catchy lament.

was up next, starting the dance number “Fader” off Conditions. Having seen The Temper Trap twice before in the last seven months, I could almost expect what the set list would be, but the Temper Trap never fails to please me. Since it was a radio show and they only had so much time to play, they ended up playing all the really strong songs off the album, so nothing seemed like filler. The double-header of “Resurrection” and “Drum Song” was the highlight of their set, even overshadowing the crowd favorite “” which closed their set. Honestly, that song is getting old, so I enjoyed the lesser-known songs like the epic crescendo of “Science of Fear.”

Following the Temper Trap was the very triumphant return of Cake. I was honestly surprised so many people in the audience was so into them, because last year’s Deck the Hall Ball was full of teenyboppers, but this year’s crowd was much more old-school. I didn’t feel old this year, which was nice. I didn’t listen to Cake a lot before the show on my own time, but I was always pleased to hear them on the radio, and these guys can still put on a great show. With old favorites like “Comfort Eagle,” “Never There” and “Short Skirt Long Jacket,” as well as newest “Sick of You,” off Showroom of Compassion out next month. I guarantee they couldn’t have found a more fun band all in their forties, and lead singer John McCrea put on a great show while having so much fun with this room of mostly kids.

Shortly after Cake, we were told that there was going to be a special guest to come out and play a couple songs. It being , and myself looking into it way too much when I heard a Pearl Jam song over the loudspeaker, I thought Eddie Vedder. He’s been known to make unexpected appearances at shows all around , so it could have happened. But I was mistaken; the Presidents of the United States of the America jumped out on stage with joy, met with an equally joyous response from the crowd.

“We came to the door and wanted to get in, and they said it was sold out. They told us that we’d have to sing a song to get in,” lead singer Andrew McKeag told the room.

Instead of playing classic songs like “Lump” or “Peaches,” they busted out with “Snow Miser” from the stop-motion classic The Year Without A Santa Claus, which was a nice tip of the hat to the holiday season, and a nice way to bring the whole show back to the local level, seeing that none of the bands playing were from Seattle. PUSA’s appearance exemplified The End’s motto “Seattle’s original alternative.”

Jimmy Eat World was next, starting off with “Bleed American,” which was one clue as to what kind of songs they’d be playing for their set. I was so pleasantly surprised to know that a majority of their songs were vintage Jimmy Eat World, because these were songs from my early teen years, when “emo” was all the rage, and still good. It made it apparent that Jimmy Eat World knew what the audience wanted, not just what would sell more copies of their new record. We got “The Middle,” “A Praise Chorus,” “If You Don’t, Don’t,” “Get It Faster,” and one of my favorite ballads ever, “Hear You Me.” I was seriously sitting on the side of the room going through my pictures singing along to all the words. Even sweeter was their cover of Wham’s “Last Christmas,” which I actually have in my iTunes library, so it wasn’t entirely unfamiliar to me like most people.

But none of the bands until then matched up to the Black Keys. After seeing their performance at Deck the Hall Ball, I’m kicking myself that I didn’t go to their show in September. Not only was their album “Brothers” highly-critically-acclaimed this year, but also ’s blues rock swagger mixed with ’s tremendous energy behind the drums make it impossible to take your eyes off them. Thank goodness there are only two of them, or else you’d have a hard time catching all the awesome. A few stand-out tracks were “Howlin’ for You,” “Everlasting Light” and the hugely popular (almost overplayed) “Tighten Up.” I’ll say that this was the one band that stuck out in several ways – the crowd they brought was easily recognizable, and they were on a completely other level than the other bands playing. You don’t hear much blues-rock anymore on mainstream radio other than the White Stripes, and the old-school attitude of the Black Keys was so refreshing.

I assumed that after the Black Keys, Broken Bells would be quite anti-climactic. In fact, when I saw the lineup a month ago, I was confused as to why Broken Bells were the headliners in the first place. They’re very low-energy compared to the rest of the bands playing that night. I’m sorry to say that my assumption was correct, even though their performance was tweaked a bit since their sold-out show at the Showbox back in May to be more suited to the big room. The songs had a bit more oomph than they previously had, but and Dangermouse’s Broken Bells still couldn’t stand up to the Black Keys live performance before them.

To be quite honest, I left a bit early as to avoid the traffic getting out of the parking garage, but I left way more satisfied than I thought I would be before I arrived. The End had done well this year bringing the buzz. I got in my car, turned on my iPod and played Cake, Jimmy Eat World, and the Black Keys all the way home.

Lollapalooza: Aftershows carry the Lolla party into a 24/3 tradition

Equally as important to the Lollapalooza experience as the time spent in is the time spent at the . With the additional official and unofficial shows after it’s lights out at Grant, becomes a 24 hour experience, three days of the week as goers pour the park’s gates into various clubs, venues and hotels throughout .

PopWreckoning made it to a few of the . Friday, it was off to : a party at the that’s popular amongst some of the more VIP Lolla attendees. It helps that this Belve Night  featured a DJ set by and performances from acts such as and to draw out a big crowd.

Neon Trees were an act that had already blown festival-goers away during their Lollapalooza set earlier that day. The act already seems to be following hot in the footsteps of similar band, The Killers. They continued to own the stage as the singer prowled the stage. The set was a brief five songs, but the band left the audience hungry for more.

Hockey followed Neon Trees with a pop rock set that was just a teaser for the even more energetic set they’d deliver in Grant Park the following day. Beginning with current single, “Song Away,” they band also played some new material and older tunes such as “Too Fake.” Hockey had their set cut short at Lolla 2009, so it was great to see them living up Lolla 2010 with extra performances.

Saturday night, PopWreckoning ventured out on the CTA to a free show at the . This show featured a  couple of amazing local acts and a few national acts – free for those who had RSVP. Gotta love free.

Though energy was waning quickly for many at this point (a long day walking the grounds at a festival spanning a park that’s over a mile-long will do that), each of the pop rock bands, The , and ,  brought a fun quirkiness to their tunes and a contagious enthusiasm. The Spinto Band even divided the audience up into three parts to be a train at one point. Odd, but fun:

Sunday, PopWreckoning returned to the Hard Rock Hotel for another Belve Nights. This evening, was bringing the best of its roster.

Among the performances was . This UK act is already being praised as one of the best Lolla acts in general and one listen to their harmonies, funky bass lines (upright bass lines, no less!) and heart-wrenching lyrics, it’s easy to see why. “Little Lion Man” is a good place to start for those unfamiliar with their tunes.

After Mumford, it was the crooning, experimental rock band The . Many are familiar with them for “,” which was on the “(500) Days of Summer” sound track. And while that song is indicative of some of the other fantastic, rollicking-guitar riffs they produce, it doesn’t really do them justice. Although, perhaps it is better that way because then audience members are extra surprised when the singer pours water on a tom drum and beats a spray of water and heavy beats midway through the set.

Perhaps the highlight of this evening was when Mumford and Sons returned to perform with . It was like everyone at Belve Nights was a part of a big family: the band, audience members (both VIP and average folk) and even the staff on hand that night. It was extra special when Glassnote’s founder even came out and echoed the sentiment. What a perfect way to end Lollapalooza….well almost. There was a one final treat. Lollapalooza headliners and Glassnote members, , though tardy to the party due to another aftershow performance, closed out the night with a DJ set. What a way to end 2010!

The Temper Trap winds up Stateside tour with Missouri shows, Bonnaroo

It’s been nearly a year since “(500) Days of Summer” was in theaters with a soundtrack introducing a then little-known-Australian-band to America. ‘s “” was a stand out track with its soaring melodies and harmonies: it was a fitting title for such a beautiful and not to sound cliche, but “sweet” sounding track.

Throw in some radio play and an album filled with more fantastic and rich, harmonious tracks and the was ready for an American takeover. But can the live show live up to the high standards set forth by the recordings? Well, if you’re in the United States, you might be running out of time to find out.

The Temper Trap has two shows left in Missouri, followed by a performance at Bonnaroo, before they leave the States and go abroad. On Tuesday, June 8, they’ll be playing the Crossroads in with Warpaint. Then on Thursday, they’ll be at the Pageant in Saint Louis.  These are there last stateside headlining gigs, though they will appear June 10 at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tenn.

If you can’t make it to these last two shows, the band will be back briefly in August to appear at and to play a mini-tour in Denver, and Portland.

Sasquatch! Festival: Monday with The Temper Trap, The Mountain Goats, MGMT

I woke up Monday morning to a thin layer of rainwater on top of my tent, hoping that the weather would still go our way that day.

What do you know? It did.

Determined to see more bands that day than I’d seen Saturday and Sunday, I went and stood in line at about 11:30, even before any bands started playing. We made our way onto the grounds to a small crowd watching local band , which features one half of the former . Let’s just say I didn’t stand there for very long. Instead I went to the Yeti Stage for Shadow Shadow Shade, a much more pleasant sound for that early in the day.

Shadow Shadow Shade sounded quite nice in the open air, with their multiple instruments and multiple vocalists to create sweeping harmonies fitting to both dance to, or just stand and listen to. I quite liked “Your Perfect Wilderness.” And even though they were playing at noon, they had a nice-sized crowd who had passed over Jaguar Love on the larger stage.

While waiting to head down to the main stage to see , I caught a bit of , also on the Yeti Stage. Unbeknown to me, Past Lives featured the other, less annoying half of the Blood Brothers. Literally, if you’d put Jaguar Love and Past Lives on stage together, you’d have the Blood Brothers. Past Lives weren’t bad. I’m not a big fan of hardcore music, but this was toned down a bit, mixing louder hardcore vocals with darker and subtler melodies.

Next, I went to see The , and I caught the last ten minutes or so of Mayer Hawthorne, who was quite fun from what I saw. I thought he was an odd choice for Sasquatch, but you really never know what to expect. The Temper Trap was about 15 minutes late to the stage, but it was worth waiting for. I have to say that they surprised me. In a good way. I expected a decent show for 2 o’clock in the afternoon, but they were awesome. Lead singer Dougy Mandagi’s falsetto mixed with the pulsating rhythms, and bassist Jonathon Aherne’s stage antics (and a glorious head of hair) made for a moving live show. At one point during “Drum Song,” Mandagi poured all the water out of his bottle onto the floor tom he was beating to create a cascade of droplets across the stage that went along with the light drizzle that had began. I didn’t even mind the rain actually, because at that time of day it was quite hot and the rain was refreshing. The Temper Trap’s songs also lent themselves to the crowd singing a long, like the repeated “lost, lost, lost” during “Love Lost,” and the “ooo-ooo-oos” during “Fader.” And especially for “,” which began with a drawn-out intro, everyone sang along. The songs have a driving tempo that’s just right for rocking out without looking like fools.

Looking like fools came later.

But I give The Temper Trap the honor of best performance (at least that I saw) of Monday. I was thoroughly impressed.

Following that great show, I went back to the Yeti Stage for a couple more shows, both starkly different from one another, but both local. First was , one of ’s most promising hip-hop acts. Being so well known in the local scene, they drew a huge crowd for 3 o’clock, and I can see why. Mixing hip-hop, pop, and glam, they sure brought the energy. Also, during their set they brought this random guy out on stage, who then proceeded to propose to his girlfriend right now. That was sweet.

was next, who I also saw back in November opening for The Lonely Forest. Frontman Benjamin Lerner was very at ease in this large arena, even if it was the smallest stage at Sasquatch. His light power-pop drew a less energetic crowd than Fresh Espresso had before, but Lerner’s songs were just as enjoyable. One girl from the crowd shouted a song that she wanted to hear, and Lerner replied with, “You really did your homework, that isn’t even on the record.” And then she spouted out something else I couldn’t hear. “That’s your favorite song? Ever? Dang.” Lerner said, very flattered.

As the sun was starting to set, started their set on the Bigfoot Solar Stage, bringing their bluesy folk rock to the festival. I would have liked to hear their great cover of Architecture in Helsinki’s “Heart in Races,” but their set was still really good. At times it almost had a hint of a gospel vibe along with their strong 60s-pop influences, which I liked, especially “Army of Ancients,” with its relaxed melodies and passionate vocals.

The , who came next, were one of the bands I was really hoping to see at Sasquatch, and I was not disappointed. Of all the performers, I’m pretty sure John Darnielle had the most fun on stage. He said, “I know it’s corny, but I love playing music.” It wasn’t corny, John. Of all the places to make that declaration, Sasquatch is it. With how much joy they had on stage, evidenced my Darnielle’s wicked awesome facial expressions, The Mountain Goats fans had even more joy. “No Children” turned into a giant sing-along, about “hoping we both die.” No really. It was charming and hilarious and joyous, and perfect for Sasquatch.

After the Temper Trap, the Mountain Goats got my second best performance of the day.

I made my way back down to the main stage for the final time that weekend to see and , who I wouldn’t say disappointed me, but didn’t wow me either.

I couldn’t get close enough to see anything but what was on the jumbotron, so that could be the reason why I didn’t react to their performances as strongly. Band of Horses were fine, good ol’ southern rock. And I was glad to hear that they did play a lot of songs off their first two albums, because I personally was a bit under whelmed with Infinite Arms. By far the best part of Band of Horses’ set was during “Funeral,” when virtually everyone started screaming the lyrics along with them, which always makes a concert better.  A concert shouldn’t just be great music, but also a shared experience with the dozens, or hundreds, or thousands of people surrounding you. Lots of people went to go see Band of Horses, so at least they accomplished that much.

Figuring that it would be a mass exodus leaving the amphitheater after MGMT and it would take forever, I went and sat on the grassy hill for the first and last time that weekend to enjoy them. I wasn’t expecting crazy stage-hopping MGMT, but I also wasn’t expecting the glazed-over possibly high MGMT either. The third song in Andrew Vanwyngarden introduced “Flash Delirium,” the inexplicable hit from their new album Congratulations, but instead they played “The Youth,” from their first album. Hmm. And about a third of the way through, bass player Matthew Asti asked the huge crowd of people in front of him, “has the sun set yet? No, it’s still holding on!” Okay. But the one thing that I do enjoy about MGMT is that their music is so odd and entertaining that you don’t really need a lot of stage presence to pull it off. By the last twenty minutes of MGMT set, the rain began to fall. It was like the sky couldn’t hold on the precipitation any longer and had to let it go.

But the best way to end Sasquatch when MGMT played songs like “Electric Feel,” “Kids,” and “Time to Pretend.” When they came on, I had to get up off the grass and dance around like a crazy fool, because that’s just what you do.

Here’s hoping next year’s Sasquatch is just as good. Or better. That’s always an option.
